I picked up a gallon at Walmart for $9.44. I have used the Super Tech 30wt for years in my OPE but thought I would try they're 15w40 this go round. I have previously used Rotella 15w40 in my OPE, but for no good reason thought I would try the Super Tech 15w40. I'm thinking the 15w40 might give me a bit of an edge over the 30wt as far as handling the heat this summer. My main mower is a John Deere LX188 with the Kawasaki 501V liquid cooled engine. I'll also use it in my Kawasaki air cooled JD JX75 self propelled trim mower. Does anyone have any experience with the Super Tech 15w40 diesel oil in OPE?

I always thought outdoor power equipment, I think it's the same thing. Basically lawn mowers etc. Anything with a Briggs & Stratton or the like.

It is dual-rated, but it's SM, not SN.

It actually has API service CJ-4/SN on the bottle. I wish I could find some of the old stuff.

I stand corrected. Just checked the gallon and the quart that my wife picked up last weekend and they're both labelled SN.

I'm curious when exactly they made the change, and how the formulation compares with the previous SM variety.

I was nearly positive it was still SM when I used it last year, but that could just be because Rotella, Delo, Delvac, etc. are SM and I'm used to seeing it on those bottles.

I personally have commented how I have used 15w40 in my B&S 500cc single for the last 6 years without any issues. The engine starts, runs, and is very economical in any heat or under any load that can be put on a lawn tractor. In the grand scheme of things, the difference between a 30wt and 40 wt for these simple engines in irrelevant. SuperTech is (to my knowledge) made by Warren Penn refining to the spec on the bottle. Good stuff and relatively inexpensive.
