In general I've heard that conventional 10w30's are good down to O degrees F is this true?? I know that I've used 10w30's in below zero weather with no apparent problems.

yes they will go far below 0F.

Sure, 10w30 is good down to 0° F, but 5w30 & 0w30 oils are better.
