Same here. I still like incandescents where they still can't be adequately be replaced by something else. Putting CFLs in the garage door opener doesn't go well. They also don't do terribly well in exterior fixtures when it's -40.

And yes, I've never broken a CFL either. My main beef with CFLs is that their lifespan isn't quite as lengthy as advertised.

Has anyone found insanely bright household LEDs? I would be happy to replace a 13W (60W equiv)with a ~13W (so no energy savings) LED if I was twice as bright, for example.

I tried only one household LED so far which was not very bright although I know there are far better available now.

I've had terrific luck with automotive LEDs. Now to find a household LED that can be seen from space.

We've got CFL's everywhere but the fridge and dryer.

The only thing I don't like about them is how brown and sometimes near burnt looking the ballast cover looks on the ones I've had to replace.

This is new news to me. All I ever buy are the cheapest incandescent bulbs (under a dollar a pack at Walmart). I'm curious, what's all the hubbub over incandescent bulbs?

Mind telling us more?

I honestly do not understand a lot of the objections to the CFLs. Certainly you might want an incandescent light in some applications but some people are really dead-set against changing them.

Same here. Almost evert light in my house is a CFL. There may be an incand lurking in a basement fixture that gets used maybe 3-4 times a year. I replaced them one at a time as the incandescents burned out. The CFLs in my bedrooms and lamps give off a nice warm light. The ones in the bathrooms and kitchen are a bright white. Best of all, the newer ones come on instantly. They last much longer, cost less to operate and I've never had one break or melt.

I suspect the anti-CFL mania is simply the latest expression of the "everything was better back in dickity-six" attitude that pervades many BITOG threads.

Compares with CFL incandescent generates more heat and consumes more power. The bonus is my local power company had heavy subsides CFL bulbs, the price for 60 watt equivalent was 9 cents each, 100 watt was 19 cents and 100 watt flood was 29 cents.
