You'd have to define synthetic then stand-by for all the non-chemists to express their nonsense.I know this has probably been beat to death but I want to ask which oils are 100% synthetic oils. Not looking to compare brands just looking for which ones are 100%. I use Mobil1 5-30 in both my cars and I'm pretty sure it is 100%.
I'm not sure.I use Mobil1 5-30 in both my cars and I'm pretty sure it is 100%.
Blame Castrol-they sued to redefine what synthetic oil “is”, namely the inclusion of Group III bases. Not that there’s necessarily anything wrong with Group III based synthetics-but Germany has always defined synthetic as Group IV or V.I know this has probably been beat to death but I want to ask which oils are 100% synthetic oils. I believe it was actually Mobil 1 who sued Castrol for the reason you mentionedBlame Castrol-they sued to redefine what synthetic oil “is”, namely the inclusion of Group III bases. Not that there’s necessarily anything wrong with Group III based synthetics-but Germany has always defined synthetic as Group IV or V.
I was half right.Mobil did not “sue” Castrol, it was a complaint filed by Mobil against Castrol about using the term synthetic in advertising in 1999 that was handled by the National Advertising Division, a branch of the Better Business Bureau. I've posted several times about this, but the notion that there was some sort of lawsuit regarding the use of the term synthetic still persists and is attaining "urban legend" status.
There was not and never has been any suit AT LAW regarding the use of the term "synthetic" for Group III base oil, and no court or ALJ has made a ruling on this matter. Mobil simply filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau in the US claiming that Castrol was engaging in false advertising by calling Syntec "full synthetic" since it was now being made with...

It’s a good synthetic Group III base.how does the GTL base oil fit in, to add ?
Same as the Mobil or better? It’s a good synthetic Group III base.
Yep, we have come a long way and can get amazing lubes from several companies - worry mainly about the supply side now …Seems like the manufactures of called synthetic engine oils, use mostly gr.3 base oils and are doing a incredible job formulating a finished product, like the new SQ,GF-7, (for example) is a far leap as what was offered only a few years ago. brand generally does not matter so much, only the specs and approvals that as what is needed to your vehicle application,,,,,,,,, with regards to the reputation of the manufacture & (blender) of the lubricant along with additive type package company can also come into play.
