At 100K I did an ATF drain and fill only on my wife's 528iA. We sold it at 128K and AFAIK it is still going strong at over 150K. That said, I performed a drain/fill at 60K on her current sled(a 2004 X3 2.5) and plan to continue this regimen at the same interval.

My old daytonas tranny was a posted child for the myth of not changing.

When it died it had close to 187K on it. I took it into the shop to get it checked and a leak repaired in July 06 and the shop told me its full of metal and clutch junk. "Its not worth paying me 400 to replace these seals, this thing is near dead". I had him change the fluid and filter. Car actually shifted ALOT better for the remaining time until the night it fully failed in July 07. He said a new fluid and filter would likely help it suffer along but it would of course still die. Personally, I think it would have died sooner had I not had the work done.

100,000 miles is something.

How about 216,000 miles? Any sense in changing it now? No shifting or slipping problems. Owner states vehicle has been in his family since new (4 drivers), he has all service records, not a single transmission service, only transmission-related receipt was for adding a transmission cooler (and enough fluid topped off to keep the system full) at 84,000 miles when the Class III hitch was installed (the hitch has been removed but the cooler is still in place).

Had a tranny's first gear start banging after fluid change at 220K KMs. Fluid was black. Opened the drain plug, drained old, put in fluid recommended here, then bang bang. SOme of the old fluid back in made the 1-2 not as harsh, but I know it wasn't good for the car or the tranny, so I put her down.

I would change the fluid even at this mileage. Drop the pan and clean it and replace filter.

What would you say about the shop that tried to sell my gf a timimg belt change? Cavaliers don't have timing belts.

100,000 miles is nothing. Change the fluid and filter with Dexron-VI and move on. End of discussion.

My boss had a 250k mile 6 cylinder Silveraado that had never been serviced the whole time he owned it.

When I mentioned that it should be serviced every 60k or so, he couldn't believe it; he always thought that automatic transmissions were "sealed units". Sold the truck to a high school student and AFAIK it's still running around today.
