Anyone think we can get to 100k OCI for new cars? Even medium duty trucks from Ford have 150k OCIs for the 10 speed transmission. (No combustion of course in a tranny). The trend has been longer OCIs. Mobil 1 AP...ect. Wonder if the technology is there for a “filled for life” just top off your oil for cars......

Advertising hype and outrageous speculation and if you look around that stuff is EVERYWHERE. Start ( if you can stomach it) watching the news with a critical eye. You’ll see such stretches of partial truths continually every day. You'll be hard pressed to get the truth from anyone selling something definitely .
As for forever anything try this guy. His commercials were far better than their cars😏. I loved that trunk space ad comparing it to the Grand Canyon! None other than Joe Isuzu

People have done it with suitable high TBN oils and bypass oil filtration.

If I was back doing 30-40k a year I would consider looking for a mid to low saps 15W40/10W30 or SAE30 synthetic oil and installing a bypass filter. I'd look to replace the oil filter at factory specified intervals and replace the bypass when oil flow starts to dwindle. Just keep the oil topped up and take occasional samples for UOA.

i guess i'm old school but say even 10k would worry me let alone 100k ...
Me too! I wouldn't dream of a 10K OCI, UOA indicates that would be a big mistake for me. Having said that they already "claim" to have lifetime ATF, so 100k OCI, maybe some day. I'd never follow that owner's manual though.

I've done it in a Class 8 getting around 7 mpg. With 40 Quarts of Capacity, a Bypass Filter and a top up gallon ever 15,000 mi with Mobil Delvac 1 it stabilized after about 60,000 mi. After that the only reason to change it was to get sediment out of the bottom of the oil pan.

Proportions would be the same with the following:
Diesel Passenger Vehicle
Highway Miles predominantly
Bypass Filter
8.0 Sump + 1.0 qt every 18,750 mi.
35 mpg average.

I don't know what would be required with gasoline.

I personally don’t feel comfortable going over 5,000 miles, but I was in a class with an instructor that used to be a Toyota factory rep, and he said when he was with Toyota, Mobil 1 sent their “scientists” to talk to them about the switch to their 10,000 recommended oil change intervals...and the Mobil 1 folks told them...honestly, don’t worry about 10,000 miles, the oil nowadays can go 70,000 miles. And he swears one of them told him, “I wouldn’t even ever change it”.

This instructor told this story to us both times we had him.

And the way I felt about it was; ok, my instructor is crazy and the Mobil 1 guys are insane. Haha.

Lifetime atf is definitely a joke. Those transmissions seem to crap out at 100k . I'm a firm believer in keeping clean fresh fluids.

I know of a vehicle locally in the 90s that made it to around 50K miles or so.

Early 90s Corvette bought by my friends mom who got a divorce..bought the Corvette and never changed the oil. She had it topped off a few times from memory by service station but seized up one day. Was the talk of the town at the time.

Another friends Dad had a Toyota Minivan that claimed that once he went to synthetic it never needed to be changed. I do not know the history of that vehicle but i would say he never changed the oil again, knowing what kind of 'expert' he was.

So if i had to say.. There would be a point where you would be adding a quart per week with consumption..which would pricewise overcome the thrift of not changing the oil.

I would not be comfortable with an OCI that long. I'm sure a certain percentage of people would love that long of an interval. These same people are the ones who never check the oil level in between Oil changes.

I can imagine the cost of an oil change once you hit 100K miles. They would probably charge you $500 or more at the Stealership saying this oil is made from the world's finest unicorn tears or some BS like that.

Briggs and Stratton did a life time fill with lawn mowers... Most people don't make monthly payments on a lawn mower though.

I know of a number of transmissions that are/were well over 200,000 miles and have never had a fluid change. My sons 2005 Tundra is around 250,000 miles and it spent a good bit of it's early life pulling trailers with me behind the wheel. Factory fill....no issues. I've never changed auto trans fluid in anything I've ever owned in 45 years of driving. Never had a transmission issue either.

Bailes1992 above said, "...and replace the bypass when oil flow starts to dwindle."

I always wanted to know how bypassers knew when to change the bypass filter's element.

How did Bailes1992 know when the oil flow started to dwindle? ....a teeny-weeny flow rate gauge?
