10 Great Recalls of all Time

One recall that Ford should have done was for the plastic intake manifold that would crack with a sudden loss of coolant on 96-2001 4.6 V8s. I know they did on the fleet cars but not on passanger cars. I replaced mine at 120K just to prevent a break down on a trip and be stranded. Those things left people stranded, often with no warning at all. Outside that one of the best engines ever.

That list is bogus.

What about the Plymouth Volare/Aspen recalls? What about the Chevrolet Citation, whick I think goes down for the largest recall in the history of automobiles? As Kestas said, the Pinto belonged on their too.....

What a useless piece. Speaking of pinto, they did not also include the crown vic rear ending effort.

Camrys in the early 90s had a power windows AND LOCKS shortout that could trap people, but instead that windbag mentioned the Honda Fit window switch issue.

Not worth the electrons it's printed on. OTOH how can I become a freelance automotive writer and get paid?

The article only claims "Ten Memorable" recalls. Not "The Top Ten" recalls. Any recall could be considered memorable.

It is more of an opinion piece than actual statistics.

Back in the late 1980s, Nissan built a COE van that was so unsafe that Nissan bought all of them back.

One of my friend's mom's had such a van.

I can't think of any other time where the action involved buying back the vehicle.

The Crown Vic rear ending issue was specific to police vehicles. It wasn't the design of the vehicle so much as the fact that they are parked on the side of the highway with flashing lights more often than any other vehicle, and that people were ramming into them at 70 mph more often than any other vehicle. But they did redesign a few parts to reduce tank puncture and help alleviate the situation a bit.

But that applies to all auto mfg, not just one where "we" can get our pound(s) of flesh.

Improper installation of equipment in the trunk area also contributed to the problem. I've heard of cases where hilljack installers pierced the gastank with fasteners while installing equipment, and the problem wasn't discovered until that equipment was removed and then the car started smelling like gas (because the fastener was sealing up the hole it made).
