That's true, but it depends what the manufacturer is actually recommending. If they're calling for the 5,000 mile OCI and insist on a new filter each time, then I'd be hesitant. If other options are given, why not? Of course, the filter manufacturers need to protect themselves. Sure enough, someone out of warranty ignores sensible OCIs and runs a premium filter for 50,000 miles will want to blame the filter manufacturer.
