That's true, but it depends what the manufacturer is actually recommending. If they're calling for the 5,000 mile OCI and insist on a new filter each time, then I'd be hesitant. If other options are given, why not? Of course, the filter manufacturers need to protect themselves. Sure enough, someone out of warranty ignores sensible OCIs and runs a premium filter for 50,000 miles will want to blame the filter manufacturer.

That's true, but it depends what the manufacturer is actually recommending. If they're calling for the 5,000 mile OCI and insist on a new filter each time, then I'd be hesitant. If other options are given, why not? Of course, the filter manufacturers need to protect themselves. Sure enough, someone out of warranty ignores sensible OCIs and runs a premium filter for 50,000 miles will want to blame the filter manufacturer.
Two 7500 mile OCI's, IMHO.

Some may claim that doing 3 times a 5,000 mile OCI on one filter for a total FCI of 15,000 miles is better than doing one OCI of 15,000 miles on that same oil filter (let's say it's a FRAM Ultra with is rated for 15K).
IMO, it doesn't matter if it's 3 x 5,000 OCIs or one 15,000 OCI because the oil filter can only filter out debris down to a certain particle size. Regardless if the oil is new or old, any particles smaller than X will get through the filter. So changing the oil will not help out the filter in any way - it may help the engine though if the old oil is at end of useful life.
The filter will become loaded up as a sole result of the mileage it's ran to if the engine produces the same rate of debris over that FCI.
