My Ford owner manuals say that when new or just after an oil change the oil level may be above the full mark and that it's not a problem unless it is way over the full mark (and they tell you where). It goes on to say when topping up not to go over the full mark. The too full level is at least half an inch above the full mark and for the '92 3.0L Aerostar I have had 20 ounces overfill and still had some leeway.
1/4" over full mark. should I drain excess?
