I just opened my PRM-189 Universal sandwich adapter, and the instructions say a minimum of 1/2" hose. How do I do that when the Motorguard I have is a 5/16? Do I disregard this and run it? Also, what thread does the adapter convert to, if it's an Fl1A equivalent I need to know soon so I can buy some filters for it to take back with me.

Yes, disregard that notation. It's for a full flow cooler installaton. Just make sure you get the correct reducer bushings or the correct brass hose barbs to work with the hose you buy. The hose barbs provided with the sandwich (if they came with it) are 3/8" NPT threads ..but the barbed end is designed for 1/2" line. You don't want to get to Japan and have to pay $$$ to get the correct hose barb. Just make sure that the barbs are the same as your hose ..and that you have two barbs in each NPT thread size.

As far as the ff filter ..good question. I've only ever bought the 3/4-16 sandwich for Ford/Mopar.

Just take the extension bolt with you to the parts store. Being a "universal" I would offer that it probably defaults to the 3/4-16 thread on the filter side of the extension bolt ..only because it would be a "toss up" with all the other options that it's designed to fit.

Just grab any non-modular Ford offering ..or most any Chrysler offering .. and see if it fits the threads.

Went to Wal-mart, aside from making 107% profit on 1.5 year old Motorcraft oil, I found out that an FL1A will mount to the filter head.

Now, it gets difficult

See if you can follow me. In Japan, the filter for my car is the same for the 2.5L that comes in the Mazda Millenia and a whole lot of other cars there.

Check the filter here, and it is the same as my bike, and other vehicles. I have 10 filters for it ID is 2.173 OD is 2.475 Bypass is 8-11

The adapter runs an FL1A thread, and the mount is 2.1875 ID and 3.0 OD. I can't remember how much room there is around the filter, so I don't know how much wider a filter I can use. I know that i have 19 cm from mount to metal support under the car, so I need to limit mount and filter to 18.9999 cm. Mount comes to 4.1 cm, so I have about 15 cm to play with for a filter.

So, here is where I am. Take the adapter, MG, and 1 7317 back to Japan, if I can, run it, mount MG, check clearances, then, when my parents come, have them bring me whatever filter I decide I can run with the FL1A size.

The FL1A uses a common size thread. You can use a PH3600 type or a shorter version which I believe is PH3614 (Fram numbers). These filters have the gasket right out to the edge of the filter so they are narrow, and the 3614 is short, too. You shouldn't need a big filter with a bypass so the 3614 should do. This is a filter used on many Toyotas.

I thought the Motorguards came with 1/4 inch barbs recently.

I have the 3/8 barbs for the sandwich, but the MG is 5/16. Do i try to rebarb the sandwich down to 5/16, or just try to rig the 3/8 to 5/16? I am about to run to Walmart and return some oil that I can't use, and I will try to get the extension bolt to the oil filter section.

Just so we're on the same page...

You have purchased other brass barbs that are not only 3/8 NPT threads to fit into your sandwich ..but they are also designed for 3/8" hose on the barb end?? Otherwise, the barbs that came with your sandwich are designed for 1/2" hose.

Assuming that you have hose that is supposed to be used with the MG ...go to The Home Depot and get the appropriate brass hose barb for the hose in either 3/8NPT or 1/4" NPT. If you get it in 1/4NPT ..also get a 3/8" to 1/4" reducer bushing.

They were purchased from O'Reilly's and are packaged as 3/8 * 3/8.

I have the vintage MG that has 5/16 hose bard ends. They don't seem to be that much different.

I do not have the hose for the MG. I bought this off of Ebay a while back.

Just to assure a good experience, go and buy matching 3/8 fittings for the MG (either 1/2" or 1/4" threaded end) and then you just get the 3/8 hose and be happy

Make sure that the hose you buy sports the SAE J1019 standard on it. Transmission cooler line should have this ..and should be available in 3/8" just about anywhere.

I will see what I can find at Home Depot tomorrow. Thanks for the help Gary. I was told to look into Fuel Injection or hydraulic hose, but it's good to know there is a spec for what i need.

Whatever is the pros stop for autoparts should have trans cooler line ..whatever something like NAPA is in your neck of the woods/urban jungle. The SAE number should be on the hose itself. It's good for (I think) 300F.

Okay, stopped by Home Depot. The MG has 1/4(or 1/8 depending on what I was using) fittings to 5/16's hose barb. Couldn't get what I needed at Home Depot. Don't want to go down to 1/4" if I can help it.

Time elapsed, so I can't edit the previous. O'Reilly's had the part, so after $10 I am adapted out. I will get the hose and filters taken care of before April when the rents come. Thanks Gary.

Here is the problem I am finding right now

I have the 3/8 barbs for the sandwich, but the MG is 5/16. Do i try to rebarb the sandwich down to 5/16, or just try to rig the 3/8 to 5/16? I am about to run to Walmart and return some oil that I can't use, and I will try to get the extension bolt to the oil filter section.
