0wt oils for the winter

Hey guys,

Wondering what you guys would recommend for a good 0WT oil for the Canadian winter.

I keep hearing that Esso carries a 0wt that is a group 4 oil (If my memory is correct)

I've always stuck to the familiar brands, and I've never purchased any Esso/Petro Canada oils.

What do you guys recommend? The car is a brand new, 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5L
 
I don't think there are any cars that can run 0-weight oils....

Did you mean 0w, as in 0w-20 or 0w-30?

Well, considering Esso is Esso-Mobil/Imperial Oil, Esso oils are very familiar brands, if you ask me. In any case, there are 0w-30 oils in the Mobil 1, Delvac 1, and Esso lines, although it seems the Esso lines are being absorbed into various Mobil offerings. There is also Petro-Canada 0w-30 synthetic which is SN/GF-5. Some of the other 0w-30 oils are dual rated HDEOs and do not meet any ILSAC energy conserving specifications.

Your Nissan manual will likely call for a 5w-30 in SM/GF-4 or better. In my view, and in the view of many others here, a 0w-30 in SM/GF-4 or better would fit the engine's requirements admirably. Whether Nissan would agree, however, is another story. If you're at all worried about warranty, I'd suggest you get it in writing from Nissan Canada.

I wouldn't ask any manufacturer if I could run a 0W-XX oil, if they only only specify 5W-XX oils you know want the answer is going to be.
0W-XX oils by definition meet all the requirements of 5W-XX oils with the additional provision of flowing better on start-up particularly at extremely cold temp's. They are also synthetic.
If you want to use a 0W-XX oil then do so, it won't compromize your warranty in any way.

With that out of the way, I'd recommend Petro-Canada Supreme 0W-30 if you require a 30wt oil foor the Altima.

Well, my point was for one to cover one's own behind. I do agree with your point, though. For one, we know other viscosities are permitted elsewhere. You and I both know that something like PC 0w-30 SN/GF-5 exceeds and is certified for all required specifications for the engine.

As I pointed out in the other thread where this was being debated, manufacturers are more worried about never changing oil or using 20w-50 in the winter in a 5w-20 speced vehicle, rather than those who use 0w-20 in a 5w-20 speced vehicle or 0w-30 in one specified for 5w-30.

I'm not positive about the OP's specific vehicle, but for the G and the Z, the specified OCIs are 3750 miles for severe service (they call it Schedule 1). Personally, I'm not running synthetic for 3750 miles, and having a heated garage and heated parking at my businesses, I'm not concerned about -40 weather.

Pardon my ignorance- so a 0W xx is a pure synthetic, no matter which brand you run with?

Now I have a lot of choices to go with. What 0W30 brand to go with that will meet the specs for my engine?

NO! There are several 'blends' that qualify for 0W-XX.
Those 0W oils do need a healthy dose of synthetic oil to make that spec., but you don't need full synthetic to get there.

Check http://lubricants.petro-canada.ca/resour...amp;language=en for the Petro-Canada synthetic specifications. Their 0w-30 is SN/GF-5 certified, which would exceed the specifications you require (likely SM/GF-4, but check your manual). For what it's worth, the 5w-30 is also dexos1 and Honda HT0-06 certified.
 
Ok so the PC 0W30 qualifies as a synthetic oil, not a blend?

I work at a Nissan dealership, one of the techs mentioned that throwing in 0w will not cause any aggrevation incase a catastrophic failure was to occur.

Where do you guys purchase PC oils?
 
I keep poping up on threads regarding M1 AFE- never heard of it? One member suggested it's a very good winter oil.

Your guy' thoughts?

It would be but you would have to travel south of the border to buy it. Not available here, as of yet anyway.

If you go to Petro-Canada's website there is a depot locator.
