"This chart, which shows an 0W-8 PCMO formulation, illustrates how a combination of PAO B and Ester D can help create a low-volatility blend compared to Group III/III+ molecules."

Interesting how a 12+ Noack PAO and an 11+ Noack ester combine to create a 10+ Noack.

Good link, buster.

LVLV stands for low-viscosity, low-volatility. There is an acronym for everything these days, especially if it sounds catchy.

You probably don't need newer base stocks to formulate 0W-8 though. GTL or PAO is probably sufficient to achieve KV100 ~ 5.5 cSt and Noack ~ 12%.

A similar effect is also seen in the PAO B formulation without blending with the ester. I think the DI pack (additive pack) and/or VII used has a very low Noack, which is driving down the overall Noack of the finished oil. Remember that most of the additive package is nonvolatile, and if they use thick oils or esters as additive solvents, Noack of the additive package could be less than 5%, which would drive down the overall Noack by about 1.5% or so, explaining the effect.

So the guys running WD-40 in a engine weren't that far off after all.

At low loads, modest oil temperatures, and easy use, the thin oil will provide good engine life.
