0w30 in the PentaStar

I put 0w30 in the PentaStar today. I got to say it's much quieter with that over the 5w20 previously. I was quite surprised at the difference both cold and fully warmed up.

I haven't been able to tell a difference between 5w20 and 5w30 in any application like others seem to be able to until doing this just now.

The reason I made the change is because I mentioned before I wanted to try different weights, as the original design called for 5w30 in 2012.

Interesting results. Might try a 40wt this summer.

So you put in 0w30 AND you put in that TriboTEX additive? Or you drained out the oil with the TriboTEX and put in 0w-30?

Should do very well, and for an extended interval.

I'd think that a 0w-40 might be very good also.

You know what I totally forgot about that. I put it in yesterday and didn't even think about changing the oil today and that I dumped it. Well that was a waste of money now wasn't it.

My mum called me and invited me up for lunch and as it was raining here I thought heck I could do the oil change in the garage there as I don't have one, and I guess in the running up there I forgot I added this stuff to the oil and it needed time to do it's thing. I think they say 500 miles. I think I put on about 100km since yesterday with running around though. So maybe it did partially something.

0w-30 AMSOIL made my '18 4Runner quieter also over the factory fill it replaced.

Also on that note, AMSOIL 0w30 and also AMSOIL 5w30 made the LS6 piston slap almost disappear in my 03 vette in comparison to Mobil 1 5w30.

Are there any used oil analysis out there for 30 weight in a 3.6L Pentastar?

In our '07 Honda I changed the oil and used Mobil 1 0w20 for the first time a few weeks ago. I immediately noticed that the engine was quieter on cold starts, compared to the Mobil 1 5w20 used previously.
I didn't want to say anything on the forum because of the "It was just your imagination, you couldn't hear any difference" responses I thought I would get.
Too bad about the TriboTEX additive, we'll need another volunteer now for a full test

I don't remember but I think there should be as it was 5w30 on the cap back in 2012.

I'll post mine here when it's ready in about March or so.

Someone posted the math behind why they think it's not really going to do anything have a read.

I just wanted to see the idle effects and noise for myself as the video shows because I just couldnt see that having an effect being so small in the overall fill.

As for your quietness experience, this is a first for me. I've honestly seen and felt no difference with 20wt over 30wt in anything I've tried it in until now.

Ford Coyotes also sound better (mostly the valve train) on 5w30 than they do on 5W-20.

I'll see what the used oil analysis of each have to say as well but so far I like the quieter engine as a preference. I knew this might have some effect on this particular engine because it was originally spec'ed for a 30wt and it has been almost the same design from then.

I did notice that the variable oil pressure seems to cause the oil pressure to bounce up and down a lot more than it did with the 20wt in there so the ECM must be cycling the pressure dump solenoid in the pan more often than it did with the 20wt.

Seems like it wouldn't make that much of a difference but it appears to be doing so. I have to convert my KPa readings to PSI though but it appears to be about a 60KPa increase on average between idle and below 3,000 rpm between the two weights at operating temperature of 80-90c (176F - 194F) and when it's cold it's about 100 KPa difference at cold idle of 1500 rpm between the two weights.

Edit:

100 KPa = 14.50 PSI
60 Kpa = 8.7 PSI

Hot oil pressure at maximum is 320 KPa (Below 3,000 rpm in gear driving) - 46 PSI On 30wt
Cool (15c) oil pressure at maximum is 380 KPa (Around 1500 rpm cold idle not in gear) - 55 PSI On 30wt

I can report back tomorrow morning when it's over night cold sitting.

(Keep in mind these pressures are not linear and bounce up/down as the ECM decides what it wants and when and cycles the pressure dump solenoid in the pan.
