That is strange. I was taught that the winter grade is what the oil starts out as. Of course as it heats up it gets thinner but in order to get it into a higher grade, like 30, viscosity index improvers must be added. By what you are saying, you start with a 30 grade oil at 100 C then add something, who knows what, in order to get it to crank like a 0W.
