Don't know if it's been mentioned already, but if it has please forgive me.

JAMA Proposes SAE 0W-8 Spec
BY STEVE SWEDBERG • APRIL 18, 2017
Members of the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association want to continue pioneering lower-viscosity oils by developing a specification for SAE 0W-8 engine oils by April 2019 for the country’s passenger vehicle market.

It was mentioned when 0w16 was announced that there was destinations reserved for each lower viscosity grade going backwards by 4s as to not confuse with other viscosity grades.

So we may possibly see 0w12, 0w8, 0w4 grades or 5w12, 5w8... I find it odd they are going to mention 0w8 but skip the next lower 0w12 in the article.

I think we'll be seeing "lifetime" oils by 2025. Complete with sealed engine and no dipstick.

My claims are completely unsubstantiated.

I'm sure it's on the radar but first we'll see longer and longer OCI specs.

Ha! I'm glad my Honda mower still has a dipstick and oil drain bolt on the bottom. I swear it gets serviced more then my $25,000 auto and also gets 89 octane Ethonol free gas. My Mazda can only dream about that. Hahahaha.

Since there's no oil filter on it, I find it easy to change the oil whenever I get bored. Always surprised by the amount of metallic bits in the pan.

They'd have to all be 0W once below 16 grade wouldn't they? Surely they'd not have an oil so thin yet not pumpable at extremely low temps.

Even 5w16 seems strange.

How on earth will a 0W16 (or below) ever meet a hot weather temperature spec of say 100 degrees F. ?

Don't laugh, I know of a team that was developing an F1 engine that actually used the exhaust as the "engine lubricant", did not use oil.
