Did you try a cap wrench? How about a socket? I thought the canister on the 3.5L V6 could be removed using a cap wrench and/or a normal socket, so shouldn't the 1.8 be the same?

The car now has 2400 miles on it. Drained out the oil & went to change the filter. I cannot get the outer case off. It requires a "Special Service Tool" (SST). Geez. So in 30 years of steadily changing oil, this is the 1st time I did not change a filter. I filled it up with Valvoline 5w-20 & we'll get a SST & change it with the 2nd oil change at 4,000 miles.

If the filter is the same as the V6s, the SST is just a 64 mm cup wrench. A 65/67 mm will work also, just slip a little. Should be a five to te dollar item at AZ or NAPA.

Has anyone figured out what the factory uses to install and tighten the oil filter?
The first time removal almost always requires one of these...

I think the M1 0W20 since it is available at every Walmart and most part stores is not an issue. I think it is going to do a better job in the long run keeping that engine clean. If at some point you have to go to dino for cost reasons then go to 5W20.

I grap those filter cups with a Channellock Filter plier, and it hasn't let me down.

I have used it on many other filter cups that don't have a standard design.
