My daughter just got an 08 Ford Fusion AWD with the 3.0 engine. I looked up Fram Ultra filters for this engine on Rock Auto and found that it lists two different filters. The XG2 "before 9/25/08" and the XG10575 "after 9/25/08". Is that the build date? If so, did something change with these engines mid year that requires a different filter? Thanks for any info.

Sometimes vehicles go from a spin-on filter to a cartridge (or vice versa)...I know the 2.5 MZR Mazda 6 has used both and the Fusion Duratech is related to the MZR.

bdcardinal will probably be able to help more, but Motorcraft says the Motorcraft FL 820 S fits all 2008 Fusion 3.0L V6 engines. So, it must be a Fram issue.

Edit: In 2009, the 3.0L V6 started using the Motorcraft FL 500 S.

The 2 filters are interchangeable, room permitting. If you can eyeball the existing filter, see if it's 'short and fat' (XG2) or 'long and skinny' (10575).

Yup, My Mom's 2009 specs the FL500/PH10575 but I always just use the FL820/PH2 size filter since I keep them in stock for my Crown Vic anyways. There is nothing preventing installation, at least on her 3.0L/FWD car.

This is correct. I still copy and paste the VIN from the RO to my cataloging on every car just to make sure, even if it is one I know. Last thing I need is an issue on my end.

Thanks a lot for the information. I was thinking of going with an Ultra and synthetic oil changing the filter every other oci 7500k and draining the oil every 7500k.

Can this type of interval be done with the FL 820 S or is it best to change that filter every oci at 7500k?

Use one filter(Ultra) for 2 OC's or use one filter(MC) per OC.

Same Threads, same bypass, same gasket dimensions, just the XG2/FL-820s is shorter/ squatter, than the XG10575/FL-500s.

they are supposed to be interchageable, in fact the Quakerstate filter line has consolidated them into the QS173, which is XG10575/FL-500s sized...

I agree with most of what you said, but not with the "same bypass" statement. The FL-820s is set to bypass at 16 PSI from Ford (or 12 PSI on the XG2)... whereas the FL-500s is set to bypass at 8 PSI (vs 9-15 PSI on the XG10575). My 2008 Fusion v6 is spec'd the FL-820s (or equivalent).
