I've developed a whine while accelerating and it seems to be coming from the alternator, it was chirping when the AFM was active but have had it deactivated and the chirp is now gone. Looking online the alternator for the car with AFM is crazy expensive, my question is since I no longer have AFM can I use just a regular alternator for a 3.9 that's much cheaper?

Your alternator probably has a clutch pulley that is making it chirp. They are sold separately, make sure you can borrow the installation tools. They often begin to fail at 75K miles, normal life is less than alternator life.

Afm is active fuel management. Apparently the pulley allows the alternator to coast or some crap when it switched to 3 cylinder mode and that's when it chirped. Now that it's in 6 cyl mode all the time there's no need for the gigantic clutch pulley it came with.
