05 Odyssey: ATF Drain-&Fill observations - 19K

Two sides of school on that. Some will say yes, others no. I'm on the keep ATF fresh, trans will last longer. That trans., to me, is like the Ford 4R70W on my truck. That trans. is good, but you GOT to change the fluid often. It likes clean fluid. I drop the 3 quarts every other oil change since 30K and now have 101K on it, this is the 4 sp AT. I'll be doing the same with our 06 5AT and hope that will keep them lasting longer. One thing on the Ody's, is that using the new VCM engine? Turning off a bank of cylinders at a time? Seems like a lot of weight for three cylinders.

I specifically bought an EX to avoid VCM. Only the upper (EX-L and above) models have it.

Also I looked and looked for that AT filter and did NOT see it. I traced the cooler lines and the whole bit. But there is a fair amount that is simply not visible. It could be directly below the battery.

Well, I can't fault anyone for not getting the VCM. But, my wife wanted leather, and, well, that meant VCM. Anyway, it works for us. We've gotten over 30 mpg twice on the highway. We usually get low 20's in town. USUALLY get 27 with cruise set at 74 in moderately hilly trips. Really pleased with how good the fuel efficiency is on this engine. HOWEVER, if you step on it, it will suck gas like a, well, 250 HP engine, which it is!

Titan;

I ran Amsoil ATF in my 2003 Odyssey (same Transmission I believe). Drain/filled at 15K and 20K, then traded it at 33K.

Absolutely no issues, shifted perfectly. I'm running Amsoil ATF in my two Hondas now (4cyl w/ 5-speed Auto), everything is fine.

To all interested-

The ATF change procedure for 7th Gen Accord 4 Cylinders is:

Drain fluid while hot, refill with 3 quarts. Drive vehicle to heat fluid up again and drain. Refill and repeat 2 more times.

This is the specified method for changing the fluid in the Honda Owner's manual.

We have a 2005 EX-L and can't be happier. No rattles, very smooth running, excellent interior, very good power, very quiet, very nice ride.

Fuel mileage is not as hoped for, but it has less than 7,000 miles on it and we live in hilly terrain. The climbing of a 900' hill over a mile drive takes a hit on the mileage.

Still very pleased we went with this versus a Camry or Altima, or Heavan forbid, a GM.

Pablo...it's not the typical filter set up that you may be thinking. It's small. On the Accords, it's located underneath the air filter. You got the 3.5 engine, so I'm not sure. But on the trans, look right on top of it and you'll see a disk shaped object with a hard line attached to it. That's it. It's small, but a filter non the less.
One thing about the Accord, I was surprised that they didn't show anything at the Detroit Auto Show. Camry has a new model, but I think it looks bulky. I still dig our 06 Accord.

thooks;

If I read my manual correctly, the procedure you've mentioned is the 'flush' (4 drain/fills) that the tech would do if you put 'non-honda' (Dexron III) fluid in there in an emergency and you needed to get all the old fluid out to avoid shifting problems.

I believe the 'replace transmission fluid' called for in the maintenance schedule is a single drain and fill (per the Service Manual I had for my old 98 Civic). That is why the first drain interval is longer than the subsequent ones (ie drain fill at 60K/3yr, then 30K/2yr in my CR-V manual).

Of course as always I reserve the right to be completely out to lunch at any time.

I just looked on my 05 Vue. The filter is not present on my transmission. It is only the 02-04 odysseys right?

Are the 05-06 Accords getting this filter (with the 3.2L) and the 05-06 3.5L transmissions aren't?

I was looking at my 04 Accord V6 for the transmission fill plug, but could not find it. Last time I filled it through the dipstick, which took forever because it is such a small diameter tube. Does anyone know if a fill plug is available on the Accord and if so can you please describe where I can find it.

Thanks.
