I own a 04 Volvo S60R with the 6 speed manual. I recently pulled the passenger CV Axle as it needed to be replaced. In doing so, I lost fluid from the angle gear (bevel gear, transfer case) and I lost fluid from the transmission. I simply do not have the money to spend at the dealer to get the oil required, so I have been doing some research.
So far I have found the transmission calls for:
API GL-4 Synthetic (Volvo part number 1161745)
and the angle gear calls for:
API GL-5 BOT (Volvo number 1161648)
I have already settled on using redline MT90 for the gearbox as I know it will work (Friends using it in his V70 5 speed)
However I am not sure if I can get away with using a non-oem oil for the angle gear. I found that Lucas Synthetic trans and diff gear oil SAE 75W-90 is a match except for the "BOT" added to the end of the Volvo oil. Not sure what BOT stands for.
Also its important to note that the collar gear that drives the angle gear is stripped and the cars AWD is currently not working. I plan to replace it within the next month.
Any advice or experience will be much appreciated.
Thank you
