After reading every oil filter study/test on the Web, I have narrowed it down to either Amsoil, pricey but an all around excellent filter, or AC Delco, cheaper with less flow but also an all around great filter. The PurelatorPremiumPlus would be a third choice because it flows so well, despite not filtering as good, but I can't get over that Mickey Mouse string around the pleats. It just looks too rinky dink. I think flow is more important in the high revving TL than filtering. I used an Amsoil filter for years on my 93 Accord Coupe that I flogged mercilessly so I'm leaning in that direction. What do you guys think?

not all purolators have the string, ive dissected 2 of them that did not have them, and viewed pages where they took them apart as well, and found no string. have you considered wix and baldwin filters as well?

oh yea, tl's are verrrrrry nice

I have not considered Wix. I can only get Baldwin filters in a case of 12...I don't need that many at once. Which Purelator filters did not have the string? I thought they all did?

get the denso 'first time fit' filters from any online import parts house, or else the nippon filters from same.

Even though honda filters are frams, I would almost feel more comfortable knowing that the bypass spring pressure, etc is matched to the operating pressures of my engine, not just some generic spec, or a spec for GM engines, etc.

If you have to be able to get the filters at the local parts store, go AC Delco, they are the best of the bunch, IMO.

I just looked at the Denso first time fit filters. Are they made specifically for Honda/Acura's? I was trying to pick a filter from oilfilterstudy.com because I could see the stats and make comparisons. Do you know anything about Denso and how they measure up? Thanks.

all I know is from experience using them.
Both nippon and denso are OE manufacturers for honda, so that is a pretty good thing. the quality of both are quite high, far better than fram, honda OE, and IMO better than AC delco, wix, purolator, etc.

As far as I can tell, the nippon filters are made for individual vehicle setups. The denso ones I am not so sure about, as the filter that I got for my girlfrend's acura integra is the same one (part number) as for my father's toyota previa. However, my bet is that nippon and denso are more in touch with the designs of Japanese engines than an american company meeting some general spec for engines for cars from all over the world... i.e. you can fit a fram, etc onto any car from anywhere. You cant find a denso to fit a chevy...

I know they do excellent jobs of keeping all insolubles out of the oil at OCIs in excess of 10k, and stay very well put together. I havent cut one up, but they have good designs, so I feel secure.

Its nice that they have a torque stopper baseplate that doesnt let you tighten it too much, so you always have it on just right.

I would have no problem at all using any of the ones you mentioned. I do have a slug of AC Delco PF44's for a Z06 Corvette (redline is 6500 rpm) and almost EVERY study and also UOA's shows them to do their job very well, both in flow and filtering. They are made by Champion Labs, which in your research is probably seen as one of the better manufacturer's of oil filters. What I particularily like about them is they are plentiful on the auto vendor market. At the time the price for the PF44's was 1.75-2 dollars?

I also have a Honda Civic product, and the oem Honda filter is manufactured by FRAM!

I just installed a Denso filter on my acura last night. I bought it for about $5 at SparkPlugs.com. The filter looks a lot like the S2000 filter I replaced it with. The Denso filter has 8 flow holes like the Honda filter and looks to be dimensionally identical. It has a silicon ADBV with a pre-lubricated seal. The filter on the surface appears to be a quality part.

I am not reccomending any filter, but may I suggest trying Mobil 1 or K&N filters which are good for flow.

If you like the Amsoil filters, see if the SDF-36 fits.

Thread: 20x1.5mm
O.D.: 2.92
Height: 4.803
O.D. Gasket: 2.46
I.D. Gasket: 2.21
By-Pass Valve: 7-9psi

Filter area approximately equal to the PL24458 I've cut open. And all the SDF-36 I've cut open have been well built.

The Honda PCX-004 filter is probably another great choice as it's speced for one of Honda's highest performance engines.

My $.02

I'm using the Honda PCX-004 filter (specced for the S2000) on our Accord V6. Looks like a pretty good filter, might want to consider it.

If anyone has the Denso part number for the 04 Acura TL and a site you have purchased Denso filters from, I would appreciate you posting it. The denso site does not have '04 part numbers.
thanks in advance..

Tight TL: Congratulations on the 2004 Acura TL.
I just purchased a 99 model with 59,000 miles. Sending off my first UOA this week on the Valveoline. Original owner was having oil changed by the dealer at 7500 mile intervals with Valveoline 5X30.
I have switched to M-1 Sync 5X30 and a OEM filter.

Do you think your dealer will give you a hard time with warranty work for not using an OEM filter.
