I'm getting ready to service our 02 Jeep Liberty's automatic trans for the 2nd time in its life. First was at 30K, and I used ATF +4 because I had read that Chrysler's were very picky about the proper trans fluid.

This go around, now close to 60K, I'd like to move to Amsoil ATF - and was wondering if anyone here has done this, and what were the results? Maybe I'm being too uptight about the whole ATF +4 situation? I've just read on several Chrysler forums about later model Chrysler trans being very picky on fluid, and I don't want to mess it up.

Thanks for any insight,
Steve

I would not do it unless you plan to extend your drain interval to get your money's worth out of that high dollar Amsoil ATF. For me, it has done very well in ATF+4 applications. I believe you could safely extend out to 50-60k miles or more. I have run Amsoil ATF over 110k miles in one car and am in the process of adding a filter to the cooler line to clean and keep clean the fluid, which still looks/smells brand new. I think one of the reasons it has done so well for so long is the additional cooler I installed at the same time as that fluid.

The Amsoil will work well in the ATF+4 but like bmwtechguy says, make sure you run it long enough to make it worth it. Don't drop your pan too early and waste your money.

And yes.... STICK TO ATF +4. We've had 4 Grand Cherokees over the years. One needed a new transmission and the previous receipts show it had Dexron/mercon installed in it. I've read the same things you have and will only use +4 in my wifes Jeep.

You live in South Carolina, so cold temps are not an issue, but what about cold temp locations- is installing an extra cooler a bad choice?

As long as it shifts normally(some are programmed for temp as a parameters), and extra ATF cooler isn't a bad choice. An ATF thermostat is also an option. Or, simply block off the cooler with cardboard, or bypass it, for the coldest 2 months of the year.
