Wow! None of these engines can be considered "short trip" type service. You don't get 65k in 4 or 5 model years doing short trips. I can't really see how you can develop sludge in this engine unless you use something like a 5w-30 dino that would shear to a 20 weight. Everyone should note that 5w-30 has restrictions on it ..and 10w-30 has a "PREFERRED" after it in the owners manual (hint-hint

).

It might be how they restrict oil to the lifters in these engines. They have normal volume oil pumps ..but don't have a lot of flow to the top end of the engine. Even with my HV oil pump, the flow to the head is rather subdued ..at least compared to something like a SBC

The "low" oil flow to the top end is why I believe my 4.0 is quieter with 10W30 than it was with 15W40.

MNgopher- I was referring to the TJ 4.0s when I said there's no EGR.
