today my mom was driving our escape through town and heard a bang. she took it to a shop and found out it blew a spark plug. heres the question with 150000 miles on it what should be replace. i plan on having heads rebuild and new timing chain and guides..anything else...water pump.. 3.0 duratech engine...

Firstly what the [censored]? Secondly, did you have the plugs cleaned and anti-seize applied to the threads? Were the plugs over tightened or improperly installed (forced threads to turn)?

If you plan on keeping it a while, in that area get the water pump replaced and a new timing chain tensioner.

TBH, there isn't much of a point in replacing parts that aren't broken but the water pump could be a good option.

Beyond what you listed, are the cats clogged on the thing? The front manifold/converters on those have a tendency to fall apart and clog the 3rd cat.

"Blew a spark plug" - Dont know what you exactly mean by that. did the center insulator blow out and the shell remained in place, or, did the whole plug fly out and damage the threads in the head? When were they replaced last and what brand? Motorcraft?

They sell a timecert insert for many applications.

You basically put an insert in the head for a new spark plug.

I did this on a buddys f150 and it worked fine..

It stripped the threads out of the head. The plug were changed at 130,000miles a little late ik. Used motorcraft iridium plugs with a little bit of anti sieze. Used a piece of vacuum line to hand tighten them in. This is the first car since my moms 1970 AMC rebel that he really liked so its a keeper.

The shavings are aluminum so they wont hurt anything if a few get left behind. Most guys will suck them out with a small hose hooked up to a vacuum cleaner then spin the engine over with that plug out to blow any extra chips out.

nothin to worry about and definatly no reason to pull a head.

Put some grease in the flutes of the tap when you cut the threads for the insert- most of the shavings will stick to the grease. Then you can suck the rest out with a vac, or just fire it up and let the (small, thin, soft) aluminum chips blow out the exhaust valve.

This happens all the time.

Heli coil makes a specific kit to fix this, I got mine from O'Reileys. I've had this happen to me twice. Fixed it both times, and no problems after that.

Like said, use grease on the threads when taping them. I also used compressed air to blow out any material that may have fallen in there.

Just take your time, and make sure you tap in straight.

The heads are coming off. I plan on having a trusted independent shop do all the work, shop is a block from my house. I plan on having the timing chain, tensioner, chain guides, any seals in that vicinity replaced. As for the heads they are going to get rebuilt, if in good shape. I guess we'll see what shape the heads are in a day or too. I would do all the work but Im a full time student and work too and its just too darn cold to do it in an unheated garage.

For all that trouble, why not just purchase a Jasper Reman engine?

For that matter, what was the point of the post?

This is going to cost a LOT to fix.

On a 150k mile vehicle, is it worth it?

I'd start looking for a new vehicle. Unless you do most of the work yourself, you're probably looking at 2 years of car payments just to fix it.

fixed it for you ;-) the Ford one will have a 3year 100k mile warranty that covers parts and labor and is good at any Ford dealer. honestly for the trouble of pulling a head on one of those Escapes i would get a motor if it were me.
