My daughter's boyfriend has an 02 accord which is fairly new to him with 128,000 miles.

150 r/t commute daily almost all highway and car runs well

Not sure what oil has been used, but he's asking and I'm inclined to suggest M1 5W-20 or PP 5w-20 (car isn't spec'd for 0w-20 so far as I can tell)

I see Advance Auto has a deal of $20 for 5 qts of Quaker State full synthetic - about $6 less than Walmart for M1 or PP

Is it a coin toss for either of the above or is one better than the other? Another brand altogether?

Whatever you want to use.
We've had two cars with this engine and they aren't picky.
I posted a 7K winter UOA from our '99 Accord here and it was really nice using PP.
It probably would have been about as nice with any 5w30.
Remaining TBN suggested that it could have gone far longer.
At 150 miles per day, this car could be run for some fairly long intervals on any decent synthetic, like PP, Ultra or M1.
10K drains are probably possible.
Many would recommend a UOA, but given the kind of use this car is getting, I'd be tempted to run 10K on any of the synthetics I've mentioned even without one.

Pretty much agree to this.

We use M1 EP 5w-20 in our Honda 07 V6. With a 70% highway/30% city mix it's good for about 13K mi (UOA confirms). You should easily get 15K with the driving you described.

The EP is $27 at WM for a 5Q jug. That's just about perfect with enough oil to top-off.

PP has a rebate on now, $10 off the jug through Oct 31. That brings the price to $14 @ WM. The PP should be good for 10K+ under those conditions.

Just make sure to get a long lasting oil filter (Fram Ultra, Mobil 1, Bosch extended, etc...)

If he is driving 3000 miles per month the inconvenience of changing oil earlier (e.g. QSUD, PP, regular M1) probably makes it worth getting the M1 EP.

Thank you all for your feedback... So no votes for QS? I use M1 in all my cars except for the 98 accord which is currently on a fill of Pennzoil HM

You could use QSUD.
Nothing wrong with it. I'm not sure that you'll find any 10K UOAs of it here, but it does have a solid add pack according to the PDS and appears pretty similar to PP.
Through the end of October at least, PP is less expensive with the MIR.

Thanks... I saw that QS was similar to PP as well. I figure they're all so similar and, since I'll never talk this kid into an extended OCI, I doubt either would be better or worse after 5k

I'll suggest the PP to him with the rebate

Thanks again for the response

For 5K with that kind of driving, don't even bother with syn, unless the owner really wants to and is willing to pop for it.
You might try educating him that syn is more about longer potential drain intervals than reduced engine wear. The engine in that Accord hardly wears anyway.
I hope this kid is planning on doing the oil changes himself.
Finally, has this gem had its timing belt replaced?
Lots of older Hondas get sold cheap around or past T-belt service time.
The timing belt is a must do, as you probably already know.
