Those cars were Volkswagen at it's worst. That 2.0L engine was slow and notorious for oil consumption (and not just a LITTLE consumption...had a neighbor with one that needed a quart about every 300 miles). Window regulators were another chronic issue...essentially the cars were rolling repair bills. On the plus side, I've never driven anything that combined taught handling with such a smooth ride...VW does GREAT suspensions.
