01 Cobra street/track oil: redline 5w30, edge 0w40, or something else?

That's cooking. Probably want at least a 40wt oil.

Yeah, it's pretty warm. That is worst case, but seems to make sense tomuse that when picking oil.

We have a 323 ci version of that engine that ran 10s at the strip normally aspirated on a road race suspension with a T56 trans.

20 Grade - Max 239F
30 Grade - Max 248F
40 Grade - Max 266F
50 Grade - Max 284F
That was the FRPP recommendations as I recall. I'm to old for midsummer heat these days so I run M1 0W-40 mostly as a do everything oil including track days.

Why? Why would he go that when Mobil1 0W40 is available in Wal Mart for $24 for 5qt?

1. It is track vehicle. Price of oil is really the least of an expense.
2. It is not all about HTHS number. What is hsear stability? WHat is composition of the base stocks and additives? It is not even close to anything with Euro approvals, let alone M1 0W40.
3. I am not sure what age has to do with it?
