I understand the 0W is for winter viscosity when the oil is cold but the Jeep mechanic is telling me the 0W oils are bad for the I6 motor and are also make the motor more noisy.

Why would a 0 weight oil be bad if it only impacts the motor when the oil is cold and how would it make the I6 louder?

I am looking at the 0W-30 Amsoil.

Thanks

REally good stuff!

Thinking about running M1 green cap (0w30) in the wife's Ecotec...might even sneek out an extra MPG or two...

It doesn't matter, cold viscosity is always going to be higher than once the oil warms up. So being a "0" weight just means that its closer to the viscosity at operating temp than a 5 or 10w would be.

It's still probably around 45cst at 40c, which is most certainly thicker than the ~12cst is once warm. So if your 10w30 isn't noisey at op. temps why would the 0w30 hence them both being around 12cst when hot.

Most mechanics don't know anything about oil viscosity.

By the way, quick note: The W doesn't stand for weight. It just stands for winter. Also, the W number is not exactly about viscosity, it's about pumpability. The big number is viscosity, which is more about flow rate. Slightly different concept.

Some 0w-30s are just thinner overall -- still in the SAE 30 range at 100º C, but a bit thinner than most.

They are also all synthetic (or synthetic blend), and it seems that sometimes synthetics don't deaden sound as much as conventionals do.

Unless an oil causes lifter tick or something, I wouldn't worry about sound when you pick an oil. I don't think it has ever been demonstrated to mean anything as far as engine wear.

Excellent oil.

Ding ding ding! Tell him what he's won! I don't think most mechanics know anything about oil, period.

most mechanics would also call you an arse if you tried to explain the concepts to them. usually they are not the type to accept advice on car stuff from "regular" people.

JT.... could you explain this a bit more...??? I find it an interesting concept...

Thanks!
