120-140 is a good comfortable cruising speed.

Although I have set the cruise at 160 in an S600, and because it was an S600 it would have been perfectly happy to do that speed until the tank ran dry. It drove about like a normal car at 80 at that speed.

That's how my brothers S500 feels! You can rest your foot on the gas and it'll be doing 100+ mph and it doesn't even feel like you're doing 60.

The magic of the S class, able to make high rates of speed seem like your sitting still.

Doing 120 in a mortal car, say a Mustang is moving fast and your holding on.

Doing 120 in an S class or Maybach = yawn, boring speed. About as exciting as 60 in a Mustang.

Its a really strange sensation.

Did you confirm the road is flat altitude wise with GPS or google maps or something? Town GIS online? Some nerd will jump in and demand proof of a still wind, too.

Try it again in the summer. Wind resistance will be down with thinner warmer air but the turbo should keep the same amount of air going in, barring a heat soak condition.

to be honest, most of the run was slightly uphill. Also, it was quite windy, crosswind. It was still perfectly stable, but it was windy. Gusts up to 45mph today.

The 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shifts are pretty sweet with good ratios and good PCM rev matching control, even though it limited power mid-shift.

In it's class. The focus does the same sprint in 22.7 seconds. But it also has 160HP. I think the transmission in this is well spaced, and shifts well under WOT.

VERY nice vid, you can tell the auto trans winds it out too far. Too bad it can't be short shifted to stay at peak torque/boost.

You guys need to get out more. Many modern American cars also cruise effortlessly at over 100 mph.

My wife put a late model Merc on the side of the road late one night on the toll road here. Ran him 3 times from triple digit STARTING speeds. He broke.

never even rippled my latte!

I just bought a new Cruze a couple weeks ago, and I have no problem with the amount of power that it has. Then again, all I do is drive to work in it, and I haven't driven it faster than 80 mph. I have no need too.
Overall I'm quite happy with it.
I did drive my coworkers Cruze with the Trifecta tune installed and it's a huge difference from stock, there's much more power. I'm actually considering tuning it myself.

I don't think it would help in this case. It only holds the gears longer in second and fourth because third and fifth are too tall for optimal acceleration. It's still making more power at 6200 rpm than at 4400 rpm.

They must have found a way to gain a mpg or two on the EPA test procedure with that gearing. Either that, or they found they could cut a tenth off the all-important 0-60 time by avoiding the shift until immediately after. Maybe both.

+1. It was the amazing thing in my saab (which is a 175/195 4-cyl). Wife and I took it up faster than 100 once to see. It felt like we were going 60.

I got a ride in a newish A6 yesterday with a spirited driver. We were flying along, and it felt like we were not moving that fast. What a nice car.

I pushed my rio5 with 5 speed manual up to 100 mph actually quite uneventful , and it still had some left, i backed off for fear of putting four nice dents in the hood.

Some vehicles definitely handle high cruising speeds better than others. My Jeep is pretty comfortable cruising up to 90 or so, but you definitely know you're moving once you get above 65 - 70. I've taken it up to 105 once, and it gets there pretty quickly for a box on wheels, but once you're into the triple digits, it's quite obvious you're flying, and the front end starts floating a little at about 110 wind speed (I had a slight headwind when I tested this).

The big thing to watch for me is the temptation to wind out 2nd getting on the highway, as the 2 - 3 shift in the Jeep is at 83 mph since the engine mods (shifts at 5400 rpm, stock was 4600 and 68 mph for 2 - 3).

The Cruze doesn't look like it did too badly though, especially not for something meant to be an econobox.

Seriously? Thin oil?

I agree with Mark on this one. Thin oil isn't required for an engine to rev. My Jeep has no problem running right up to the (750 rpm higher than stock) 6k rpm rev limiter on 5W-40, and it doesn't struggle to get there (although the power curve falls off pretty badly past 5400 or so).

The wind sure doesn't help, but its funny how that seems like perfectly reasonable acceleration. When I was a young punk I had my Mom's '85 corolla pegged at 92mph... Then it would shift into OD and slow down until it down shifted again...
100mph is plenty quick though for an issue to come up though, I went into the rubarb at 55 on a track, and now I can see how a passenger car with a 3 pt belt is not really all that safe once things go bad...
