    Piston Ring Question

This is a sheer curiosity question. Do piston rings make contact with the cylinder walls or does oil prevent metal to metal contact? I just can’t see how rings can seal without metal to metal contact. And if there is metal to metal contact, how are rings not worn out extremely quickly? If oil...

    Mobil 1 15w50. 1985 Chrysler Laser turbo. 1000 miles (70k total miles).

I dumped the original oil, then ran mobile 1 for 500 miles or so. Dumped it and them ran mobile 1 again for 1000 miles and collected the sample.

Definitely. The head gasket issues were almost always the result of people being cheap and using regular gas. These turbo engines require premium. However, if the previous owner was cheap enough to use conventional motor oil, he would probably cheap enough to use the cheapest gas available.

    Mobil 1 15w50. 1985 Chrysler Laser turbo. 1000 miles (70k total miles).

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’m going to run it 1000 more miles and then do another oil analysis before making any decisions. I found a couple mopar head gaskets for sale on one of the K-car groups and bought them both. They will be good to have around regardless as they are NLA from...

    Mobil 1 15w50. 1985 Chrysler Laser turbo. 1000 miles (70k total miles).

I picked up a barn find 1985 Chrysler Laser with the 2.2 turbo motor. I’ve been restoring it and I ran an oil analysis after the first oil change. Looks like this engine has a few issues. I assume the presence of coolant means I have a head gasket leak. The wear metals also seem to be a bit...

Mobil 1 15w50 in cold weather

It’s not my primary vehicle, I also have a Tesla and a Chevy truck but I will say I drive the TR more than any other car. I’d almost call it my daily driver.

Ikr, but if I can’t get the all seasons on the summer tires can crack in extremely cold temperatures.

Mobil 1 15w50 in cold weather

Yes, tires are a concern. I’m actually planning to put hot hands handwarmers on the tires the night before. Not sure it will help. I’m also considering running to Lowe’s and buying a propane heater. I’ve got a set of all seasons that are supposed to arrive Thursday so hopefully I’ll have them on...

Mobil 1 15w50 in cold weather

It is garaged, but with being in the south, it’s a detached non heated/non insulated garage.

Mainly curiosity, also if it’s safe, tiny chance I might go for a drive, the heater does work great.

Mobil 1 15w50 in cold weather

I took the advice of several forum members and used Mobil 1 15w50 in my Ferrari Testarossa. I am in Alabama where it rarely drops below freezing. However, it looks like we might get a once in 30 year cold snap next weekend. They are saying lows could be around 10F. I seriously doubt I will...

Recommendations for my 1988 Ferrari Testarossa.

Not crazy at all. Speaking of the Testarossa, it also feels like you’re driving a lot faster than you are. Driving 70mph feels like 100+. I assume the 308 would be similar.

Oh trust me. I do drive it quite often. It’s definitely not a garage queen. I’d even call it a semi daily driver. Never understood why anyone would buy an exotic car and only drive it 100 miles a year.

Yes, that’s the problem. Stock wheels do not fit. However, there is a company that makes wheels that are almost identical to stock which will fit. I’m considering them.

I know there are a few speciality oils, like Amsoil, Royal Purple etc. Do they offer any real advantage over Mobil 1 or are they just something to spend your money on?

I am in Alabama. Mid Winters here typically average in the 29F lows to the 55F highs. We occasionally have a cold snap where nighttime temps drop below 20F and occasional warm snaps in the 70-80s.

    1. It actually does. 2. It helps, but it doesn’t have to be an official dealership. Service records from a decent indi shop are fine. With that said, a record from Jiffy Lube probably wouldn’t look good. With older Ferraris, a lot of people do their own maintenance. As long as you keep receipts...
