How do you keep bolts organized when disassembling things

I recently dropped an oil pan on a 3/4 ton Chevy. I also had to drop the front axle a bit. On the way to the shop where I did the work, I picked up a box of 1/2 cup canning jars. I took the tops off and arranged the jars in a row. As I disassembled things, I place the bolts in groupings in the...

Vehicles with optional engines that use a different viscosity

I came across this page in a owners manual for a 2021 Chevy Malibu. The oil recommendation for the 1.5 Turbo is 0w20, but for the 2.0 Turbo is 5w30. They are both 4 bangers, so the connecting rods and journals of the 2.0 are carrying a larger load. Not sure if the rods and journals of the 2.0...

Programming two new FOBs for GMT 900 vehicles

I recently purchased two new FOBs for my 2008 Suburban as the old ones were toast ( even with new batteries). There are all sorts of You Tube instruction videos but some miss a key point. Some of these vehicles with electric seats have a seat position 1 and a seat position 2. You can program...

    Cargo Flights from Asia

My neighbour commented he sees more jet streams in our sky above us just north of the Idaho border. I used my Flight Aware app and other than the usual flights between the coastal cities of Victoria and Vancouver and the rest of Canada, I found these two flights from Anchorage headed to...

Front brake job 2005 Ford Taurus

Here are some shots from my front brake job. I used Napa Premium brake pads and rotors and everything fit. There was a mention of ceramic content on the box for the pads. The pads came with shims pre-installed plus some extra shims I did not need. There’s 120,000 miles on the car and I bought it...

    Dissolving Road Salt off paint

Road salt is not just an eastern thing. In BC they pre-treat roads prior to snow falls or freezing rain. The back of my Burb is covered in what looks like crystallized salt. It will not dissolve in fresh water and a jet at the car wash will not take it off. I spent the morning trying to wash it...

Diff oil seal for front CV axles on 3/4 ton Chevys

I have a leak at my oil seal on my front diff. To get at it requires removing the CV axle ( drivers side). I noticed one mechanic at the You Tube mechanics school recommends replacing the stub axle to have a non worn surface for the seal. That adds a couple hundred to the $15 seal repair...

    Colt Cobra

Does the Colt Cobra have much of a following? It came back into production in 2017. Historically, it was the gun in a .38 caliber that Jack Ruby used to shoot Lee Harvey Oswald.

Oil leaks on Chevy LS engines

Chevy LS engines are generally great for not having oil leaks. Mine is a 6.0 in a GMT 900 Burb. It has 260,000 miles. After about 200,000 miles it has a bit of oil leakage. The first photo shoes some oil accumulating at the bottom of the pan in the area between the fill plug and the oil filter...

    West facing solar panels

Although it’s a no brainer that solar panels in the northern hemisphere should face south, the loss of efficiency of facing them West is only 15%. In addition, some jurisdictions will give a larger price for time of use towards the end of the day, reducing that 15% number. Here is an excerpt...

    Favourite parts cleaner

What’s your favourite parts cleaner for greasy bolts when disassembling stuff like oil pans. I find of you don’t clean the bolts there’s a risk they may have some grit on them when it comes time to screw back in. I used to soak them In a container of Varsol.

Pride Trucking, a company that does a lot trucking between the US and CANADA is near bankruptcy. It has control of 20,000 tractor units and is $ 1.6 billion in debt. What does a trucking company have to do to borrow $ 1.6 Billion ? Apparently things started going bad during the C times, then...

    Permatex Spray Sealant

Has anyone tried the Permatex Spray Sealant? It’s for low pressure applications like pan gaskets, or high side of diffs, anywhere where slashing oil can leak out at a bad gasket. I wouldn’t put it on a hose but it might help on those pesky leaks where pans bolt to rails.
