Is LC20 a solvent? Can it be used with "thin" oil?

I don't know where I read this here but someone noted that oils like 5w20 are thin enough and adding a "solvent" like LC20 is not a good idea. I've been using it with my 5w20 havoline dino ever since I hit 3000 miles on my Honda Vtec V6. Any thoughts as to the validity of this statement? Will...

New 100% PAO oil - what would you ask the company?

A couple months ago someone here mentioned a new, full synthetic oil that is made by DSI (Direct Synthetics, Inc.) out of Tyler, Tx. I live 40 miles from Tyler and posted in that thread that I would try to get out and meet with these people. I called yesterday and made an appointment and went...

    Changing filter every other OCI?

My Honda's manual says to change filter every other OCI. I've always felt it is better to change filter each time you change the oil. Is there any reason Honda feels this way? Are there other manufacturers that suggest every other filter changes? What are your thoughts on this recommendation?

    '06 Honda Ridgeline, 6500 miles Havol 5w20/LC20

12500 total miles on truck which was purchased new in May '05. First oil change in Jan. '06 when OLM showed 15% oil life expectancy on the factory fill. Changed with Havoline dino 5w20. Last week the OLM again showed 15% so I changed again with Havoline 5w20. The sample shown is nine months and...

Synthetic or Dino for short trips - new Sonata?

A lady just bought a new Hyundai Sonata 3.3L V6. She asked me to help her and I told her for her kind of short trip driving a 4cy might be better. However, she liked the Sonata Limited and it was a V6. It calls for OCI every 7500 (less if "severe") and uses 5w20. She drives 1/2 mile each day to...

Is our oil the same now as Pre-Katrina?

It has been a little more than a year since the hurricane Katrina hit us. I recall reading here at that time that Post Katrina motor oil would be different than Pre Katrina due to supply shortages of additives or whatever. Some members even felt that the oil we had been using would now be of a...

    Car buying question please

Should one be able to negotiate a better deal by ordering a new car to his or her specifications? This is to be sure the color and interior and all the right options are just like you want them. Or, buy one that will do off the lot? The reason I ask is that someone said it is always better to...

Anyone know about the Mercury Milan?

Grandma wants a nice little 4dr sedan and I've been hearing lots of good things about this car. Anyone know anything about it or have one?

Help with a car for grandma

Here is the situation. She will buy something like a Tarus, Altima, that little Merc or some similar four door before the end of the year. She goes to visit at her friend's house each day (1/2 mile away) and then to church once a week (2 miles away). Maybe she will go to the store once a week as...

Has anyone seen oil related problems before 50K miles?

I ask for a couple reasons. First, I see post after post where people say (and I have said the same thing on occassion) that, under most normal conditions, you could run any oil on the market, not worry about things like UOAs or filter quality and go 5000 mile OCIs without worry. In otherwords...

Do I really have to change rear differential fluid?

I change my own oil and filter but never had to do a rear differential on any vehicle I've owned for the last 40 years. However, the maintenance minder on my new Honda Ridgeline truck will soon show the service due notice for a drain and fill of the differential fluid and need some tips on DYS...

How do you store a filter stash?

I have about 10 filters for my new Honda. They were the seldom seen Nippons and Filtechs so I stocked up. I keep them in a closet in the house so that they are not exposed to sunlight, heat and cold but I'm wondering, since some won't be used for a couple of years or more, if you do anything...

Why don't you change your own oil?

I've been reading several threads and posts about problems people have had with some dealers and service stations, even for something as simple as an oil change. There are stories of these places telling you to come in every three months, trying to hard sell you things that are not related to...

    Are Jump Starters any good?

A lady I know owns an old 1971 V8 Firebird. She hardly ever drives it as it is a second car. It has been restored so she keeps it under cover most of the time. Every so often when she tries to start it it won't turn over and she ends up getting a jump from someone. I guess this engine takes a...

Question about oil packs in Havoline and other oils.

I looked at the virgin oil tables and found oils showing various "units" of different things they use in their additive packs. For example, Havoline 5w20 shows around 400 "units", or whatever they are called, of moly. I know some good oils do not even have moly as everyone has a different idea...

    Amsoil and LC20 = 50,000 mile OCIs

I've been reading some old threads and I read one where Amsoil says its oil can go 25,000 miles before a change is due (in fact, I think they give an engine warranty to that effect). I've also read where LubeControl says using LC20 will prolong your oil (dino oil) to 10,000 miles which is double...

Is it really important to change oil when it is warm?

I've read several threads that talk about changing oil shortly after a car has been driven a while. Why is this? Is there any harm in changing oil when the car has sat for a few hours, or even overnight? It seems to me that if a car were just run it would be too hot under there especially if...

Anyone use teflon tape on their oil drain plug?

I am about to do my first oil change on my 2006 Honda and purchased a Fumoto valve to replace the drain plug and make future oil samples and changes easier. Since the Fumoto is a permanent replacement for the oil plug, I was concerned that after a long time and many pounding miles, it might...
