Should I expect nasty black smelly oil?

Admittedly the first time I owned a GDI engine I did notice the fuel smell and how quickly the oil turned dark in the engine. And I was mostly a highway commuting, eighty miles a day, driver. 2018 Chevy Silverado.

Unveiling the Superiority of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Oil: A Detailed Analysis by Mr. Lake Speed Jr.

Yeah, I think it’s very much luck of the draw with these things. I actually think the harder you run them, and the less it switches into V4 mode, the less problems you tend to have. IMO.

    Updates on Castrol Edge EP?

Yup, same here where I am (North East). Not a single auto parts store or Walmart carries it anymore. Not a single one within 100 miles of me anyway.

The truth about oil change intervals and analysis

That guy is as much of an “engineer” as someone driving a choo choo train.

    Oil is Oil

I think, like many have said on this thread, under normal driving conditions in most engines a lot of oils will not outperform the other. However taking it to different scenarios…extending drain intervals, severe use, direct injected turbo engines…a higher quality oil will perform better in...

Castrol Edge HM now claims 15k mi protection.

Didn't realize that! The last time I looked it was only available in one quart containers.

Amsoil 5-30W Signature Series Vs Mobil 1 0-30W AFE

I did notice some visual differences between Amsoil (signature series) and Mobil1 (EP and previously AFE) when using them back to back. But no sound differences. The Mobil1 changed color/darkened in a more linear way throughout my 10,000 mile OCI. The Amsoil changed color/darkened very quickly...

    M1 0w40 vs Amsoil OE 0w40

That’s the thing, Mobil1 seems to change their formulas around quite a bit with this particular oil…last time I checked it was around 40% PAO, which is pretty impressive to me. I want to run it in my Toyota Avalon, and I just might some day, but right now I tend to chicken out (it recommends...

    Particles in oil (religiously changed)

Could be something left behind in the filter from poor quality control, maybe adhesive. Also, you don’t use speedy dry at home, do you? Looks almost like clay from speedy dry. Then again it wouldn’t be white like that after absorbing oil. Was the funnel clean when you changed the oil? I can’t...

    Acura Oil Consumption

If I’m understanding this you are basically doing an oil change at 7,000 miles but not actually changing the filter out until 14,000 miles? Or are you changing the oil out when it gets to the low point at 4,000 miles, again 4,000 miles later and again at 12,000/14,000? Then changing that filter...

The truth about oil change intervals and analysis

I’ll have to check that out, I have only seen some of his videos…usually it’s typical diagnostic stuff.

The truth about oil change intervals and analysis

I was a little surprised that Lake Speed did seem to endorse lower oil change intervals, while also hedging that, mentioning analysis/climate/fuel/commute, whatever. As for the other guy, the thing I don’t understand is he seems to be claiming or inferring that they are in the engine...

    Moly or Boron preference?

Bravo to you sir for answering like that. I was being sarcastic, and it was a joke. Sorry, next time I’ll put more than a smiley face at the end.

    5.7 Chevy oil

With that thing being 28 years old I’d think any sort of high mileage oil couldn’t hurt…might actually help with some of the seals on that engine.

Why not just run a Euro oil?

Got to say I’m considering doing the same. My wife’s Mercedes takes the 0W40 Mobil1 FS, I’m thinking about honestly switching my Toyota to it (even though the 0W20 is “recommended). I’ve been running 5W30 in my Toyota for the past two years or so with good results…my next run is with the PUP...

    Long OCI

Well, then the description of what you described is off because you said he kept these vehicle a few years on a lease. That would be around 117,000 miles. That’s without taking a vacation or a single sick day in three years.

    Long OCI

I know someone like that as well, but he doesn’t lease, he’ll buy used. He has absolutely gone past the 7,500 mile mark into the 10,000 mile range and he’s never had an engine failure. He doesn’t even check the oil level. Same 150 mile daily commute, 700 miles a week. Cruise control set at 75...

What oil and filter for 2017 5.3L Sierra?

I’ve never seen Pennzoil Ultra stocked on Walmart shelves, but Ultra is on sale online (Walmart and Amazon) for between $27.48 (Amazon) and $29.50 (Walmart), which is a far cry from the prices I was seeing it at last year (around $37 if I remember). I just picked up two jugs.

I don’t know, share your secret.

    Long OCI

Yeah, but not everyone can change their oil themselves. And not every shop is willing to change oil for you for $16 bucks (and let you bring in your own stuff), so I’d say the guy is doing pretty darn good overall.
