Always wondered why the tire Load/Index charts list 35psi max load?

The tire/index load charts have always listed the maximum load capacity for any given load index at 35 psi. That is fine for a tire rated 35psi max, but there are so many tires now that can take up to 51psi which should be able to carry more load, but the specs stop at 35psi not matter what size...

Tirerack has been bought out by Discount Tire sadly.

After being a tirerack customer and installer since 2004, it makes me very sad they sold out to Discount Tire. I find it hard to believe that will be better, so I'll just wait and see...

Hot Rod's 1957 Chevy Project X just went Electric

This story just came out, and there are some videos out on the recent built converting a 1957 Chevy to an 340hp electric motor. I think it is a great idea to have alternative power for these old cars. Controversial, but it looks like what we need to think about keeping all the old classics on...

Fascinating video of a production robotic tire and wheel assembly line!

I have been wondering how they mount and balance tires/wheels at the factory. Pretty cool the way they do it now. Haven't seen anything yet about how it was done in earlier years. At least they don't have to deal with corroded bent wheels, and who knows what for tires...

    Honda Noise-reducing Wheels?

I was installing new tires on a 2015 Honda Accord, and was surprised by what the inside of the wheel looked like. I had never seen or heard of anything like it before and didn't know what the big black plastic things were stuck to the wheels, and the strange rim profile Turns out it is a noise...

Found a very tough tire leak by chance

I installed some new tires on some new wheels for someone recently, and he told me the next day one of them was flat. He dropped it off, and I sprayed the whole tire, and wheel with soapy water. Looked everywhere and no sign of anything leaking. So I focused on the rubber TPMS valve stem, and...

GoPro camera inside of a tire...Amazing.

This is a great video of a what happens inside a tire while it's moving. It is amazing to watch, and wait until the end, and you can see the water vapor escaping with the air when it deflates. I never had any idea what was going on inside the wheel, and the tire moves a lot more than I ever thought.

What happened to the real pickup trucks with regular cabs?

I have never had a pickup truck that didn't have a regular cab with either a 8 foot box, or even a 6 1/2 foot bed. I have had many over the years, and now I can't find any. A crew cab truck with a 5 1/2 foot bed is pretty useless in my opinion as a truck for hauling stuff. Not much better than...

    My 4th cordless 1/2in impact, IR 20v 1500lb rated

After 4 cordless impacts, I know how fake the advertised nut busting torque is. I remove/install a couple thousand lug nuts a year, and always liked using a cordless impact. The first one I bought 16 years ago was a Milwaukee 18V rated for like 275ftlb, and it couldn't remove a 80ftlb lug nut...

Beyond Round and Black. More than you want to know about tire grip

Stumbled across this great technical article on tire grip, and I was surprised at how much I didn't know about how much science and testing that goes into tire design. There is definitely more to a tire than what they look like, or cost. I'm guessing some of the cheap line tires probably skip a...

Sure you could use anti-seize on your studs, but???

For everyone that thinks using anti-seize on wheel studs is a great idea, you might want to think about it more. Sure it will torque up and clamp the living do-do up really tight, but at the same time it is also can stretch the stud beyond the yield point to the point they could just snap. Yes...

Annoyed with people selling cars on Craiglist in autoparts to save $5

I've been really annoyed with all of the people trying to skate out of paying 5 dollars to post a car for sale in the auto parts section. I just responded to someone in a text message that had a beautiful classic car for sale in auto parts for $15000, and told him that pretty soon we will all...

After 14,000 lug nuts I got Torque wrench calibrated

I have a 1/2 inch 250ftlb Precision Instruments spilt-beam torque wrench I paid about $200 15 years ago. Had it calibrated 8 years ago, and have torqued over 14000 lug nuts since. Even though it always felt right I tried not to worry about it, but figured since I have saved over $600 on yearly...

Great. Now we have to deal with noise-cancelling tires!

I needed to repair small screw hole right in the middle of a 2019 Audi tire, only to find out the stupid tire is lined with acoustical foam rubber. Never seen anything like it before, and didn't know how to repair it, since it would be a big mess trying to rip out a section of foam for a...

Car wash activated sliding door on new Chrysler Pacifica

The local car wash I do maintenance at had an incident the other day with a new Chrysler Pacifica. A lady with a little kid in the rear car seat, had the car wash brushes we think activate the auto sliding door on the driver side, and ripped the door completely off of the van. There is a button...

Not very impressed with Nokian Hakapelliita 8 studded tires

So far after a couple 6 inch snow storms my new Nokian 8 studded tires have not been very impressive. They are okay to a point, but any slip, and the traction goes away. Not very predictable. Even on icy intersections they don't have great grip either. I only have a couple hundred miles on them...

WHY barcode stickers on the tire bead seat???

It makes zero sense to me as to why most tires made have a stupid plastic barcode sticker right on the bead seat sealing surface of the tire. I just fixed one tire today that hade a very slow leak. After seeing tiny bubbles, I marked tire, and wheel, and sure enough it was leaking right around...

    Cool Holw Saw Trick

Something I never would have thought of, but if I ever needed to make an existing hole bigger with a hole saw, I had to resort to hacking away at it to make it bigger after cutting out the 1/4 inch pilot hole. But, you can simply use the smaller hole saw as a pilot screwed on to your arbor...

    Ignition coil polarity explained...

On standard ignitions, I've always just hooked it up the way you are supposed to, + power, negative to the distributor. I was wondering why, and came across a great article on how it really works. It makes much more sense now, and a great subject to know. Tesla knew about high AC voltages very...

I think I'm going to try Nokian 8 studded tires

Just picked up 4 15 in steel wheels for $50 for my 2002 Camry. I want to try the Nokian 8's 205/65-15 that are studded with like 50% more studs of the new softer design. I hope that will make my Camry one of the fastest cars on the road, at least in the ice and snow for $500. Got a great deal on...
