    Expert Reply Requested - *W20 in *W30 spec'ed car.

I will keep it short. (Very uncharacteristic of me) After 5 some years of brands and UOA's as well as VOA's I have settled as to what brand oils I use. So I am NOT looking to change brands. This is my question: IMO, given today's oil additive packs, and the fact that I am convinced that "thin...

Need "Expert" Advice or Opinion ACEA Dillema

Hello Again. Finally retired the old X-Type (Ford Mondeo) in favor of another real Jaguar. Just bought 2012 XF Portfolio. 10K miles. Ok enough background. On with my concern. For the record, I run Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W30 in ALL my vehicles. Years of astonishing UOA's have proven, beyond...

To Be, or Not to Be - A REAL Synthetic...

I have read somewhere that in Europe, or in certain European Countries, when they claim "100% Synthetic", that is what you get, 100% Synthetic "Laboratory Produced" Oil. I have also read somewhere, that the definition of 100% Synthetic in the USA is somewhat different. It has to contain "some"...

GF-3 (vs) GF-5 or SL (vs) SN

I prefer using the OW30 viscosity (GC) in my BMW over the M1 0W40 simply because of the "valvetrain noise" on initial startup on the Z4 (BMW). When I used M1 0W40, the oil was much darker at oil change time (every 5000miles) than it is with GC. Is there an advantage to using the GF-5/SN M1 0W40...

How exactly does the OLM work?

2 of my 4 vehicles have an Oil life meter. Even though, I religiously change the oil every 5000K following the odometer religiously, I have always wondered how they worked. By the time I roll to "the 5"s" (5000, 10000, 15000 etc...) usually ther may be less than a few hundred mile difference...

Oil Expert Opinion Needed - PDS Confusion ASTMD445

HI guys, OK. To keep things short, A bit of background. I need to run ACEA A1/B1-A5/B5, SN, GF-5, WSS-M2C946-A, WSS-M2C929-A (old Spec) 30 Weight oils as these engines are spec'd for 30 weight. 0W30, 5W30 are specifically stated, 5W30 is "preferred", for what reason I don't know, perhaps it...

"Cold Cranking" Viscosity Question 0W30 vs 5W30

HI there. Before I ask the question, there are a few things I want to mention, so there is no confusion & we don't turn this into a fiasco. I know and WANT to use oils that meet Ford WSS-M2C929-A and/or the "new" WSS-M2C946-A which superceedes the previous. I WANT an SN rating and at least a...

    A1/B1-A5/B5 "Low Vis" (vs) A3/B3-B4 LL01-MB 229.5

Here we are, and I've made a lot of changes & I wish to thank many members of this board for their great advice. I do, however how one more issue for which I need some clarification. I will keep my question simple. Q) If your car called for either oil "type", but preferred low vis WSS M2C929-A...

    A "good" oil recommendation request

Quote: So, when you ask for advice, tell us about your car! The more details, the better. Here are the essential points: 1. What kind of vehicle you have 2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change...

    Should they rename Oil Grades?

After reading Oil 101 posted by Bob, I now realize that I might have been believing certain myhts as being "true". I've been very confused, even obsessed about certifications and grades in my choice of oils - right up unitil now. If I learned right, all that really matters is the 40C Viscosity &...

Even the manufacturer doesn’t know what oil 2 use?

Even the manufacturer doesn’t know what oil I should use. . . Short History: 1) Needed to find an oil that would flow faster a cold crank and reduce the astonishing amount of valve train clatter on my BMW Z4 (2.5i Sport), was referred to Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W30. Had been using the BMW OE...

Factory Engineers must have had a stroke!

OK. My car's owner's manual calls for SL/EC A3/B3. A few months later, the same EXACT Supercharged Motor calls for WSS M2C913-B (MUST be used) and IF you can't find it, use A3/B3 or A1/B1? MY GOSH what's the deal? These are the EXACT same engines. Yet one recommends the High Vis stuff, the...

What is better? PAO Only or Pao/Ester Oil?

I always thought that PAO, far outperformed, outlasted and remained in-grade better and more reliably than the "other" synthetic (or synthetic wanna-be). Now, I've run across both, and was wondering which was the "better" oil. I am basically comparing 0W30 (German Castrol)which is PAO and...
