OK. My car's owner's manual calls for SL/EC A3/B3. A few months later, the same EXACT Supercharged Motor calls for WSS M2C913-B (MUST be used) and IF you can't find it, use A3/B3 or A1/B1?

MY GOSH what's the deal? These are the EXACT same engines. Yet one recommends the High Vis stuff, the other the Low VIS stuff.

Once and for all, what on earth is the difference between High Viscosity Castrol European Formula 0W30, or Mobil 1 0W40 versus SM, A5/B5 low viscosity oil.

Which is the better oil to run? The manufacturer (Jaguar) doesn't seem to know.

Both Castrol's 0w30 and Mobil 1 0w40 are non energy conserving oils by their labels as they are slightly thicker than the energy conserving variants. They're both great oils and I've ran both in my LS1, but I've had a hard time sourcing them lately, not to mention the extra cost as they aren't available in 5qt jugs.

I have a 4.0 S-type as well and I run a blend of 15w50 and 5w30 Mobil 1 in it. The resulting viscosity is similar to German Castrol for much less cost.

If I could afford the rides you own and maintain, I would think u could get one of those factory clowns to come to u house tell u what oil to use and maybe change it for u, IMHO. Nice cars.

WSS-M2C913-B has a minimum ACEA performance level of A1/B1. In 2008, Ford came out with WSS-M2C913-C, which has a minimum ACEA performance level of A5/B5.

Both A1/B1 and A5/B5 standards have an HTHS viscosity between 2.9-3.5 cP, use Group III base stocks and generally have an SAE grade of 5w30.

The A3/B3 standard has a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5 cP, and tend to be a mix of Group I and Group III base stocks. All three standards have a minimum TBN of 8.0.

So as far as the differences between High Viscosity Castrol European Formula 0w30 and Mobil 1 0W-40 vs ACEA A5/B5 is concerned, I would imagine the HTHS viscosity is what you're looking at. Mobil 1 0W-40 (and I'm sure the Castrol oil) meet ACEA A3/B3/B4, and the HTHS viscosity is greater than 3.5 cP.

I reckon Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 would be a good candidate for this motor, considering it (SM/GF-4 version) meets A1/B1-02 and A5/B5-02 whilst meeting the engine protection requirements of B3-02. I'm sure the newer version is a better oil.

OP, what year and type of Jag ? is it the brand new one ?

if its the new Indian company owners, i dont think they know diddly about engine oil and you could likely run anything from 0w30 to 5W-50 in there with no problems. the jaguar oil saga continues

Printing manuals is expensive; I wouldn't be surprised if they are discontinued and replaced with CDs/DVDs/flashdrive/installed in the navigation system. I wouldn't put it past a company to use up an old stock of manuals with fluid information that is not to most current, and won't cause any harm if used. Especially if a recommended fluid type can not be found in stores and replaced with an updated version.

or better yet--they have replaced the owner's manual entirely with a help desk line in New Delhi. Hello, This is Sally, How can I help you?

Steve

How are you certain there are no internal engine changes?
I still think that there is a possibility of this. Car companies do this all the time.
