I have a feeling you're right. The standard oil filter are more or less there to catch big stuff. A well maintained engine shouldn't have any big stuff falling off, so they may only be there for the insurance and consumables business.

Anyone put a bypass filter in a Taurus 3.0L 24v or a Windstar 3.8L. I changed my oil this weekend in the Taurus and thought I would put a bypass filter on it too, but I guess I was dreaming because there isn't any room for one. Any ideas or experiances other than relocating the battery?
