Breaking people of the 3000 mile oil change habit

over here in Europe it's the opposite, if you say you change the oil before 10'000miles people look weird at you..I changed my oil on my Ford Mondeo 2.0 since ever every 10'000miles, car got 120'000miles and never had an engine problem... As long as the oil is so cheap in the USA (here you pay...

My Review of SAE Articles from 2006 and 2007

so as I asked in another thread, you are saying that the viscosity has nothing to do how strong the film is to protect the bearings but the additives are the only protections??

AEHaas thinner oil vs. 10W60 on old 500HP V8?

oh well, there are many brands out there over here, Valvoline, Castrol, Mobil1 (but I think it's different than the US one), Kendall/Midland (the one I get) etc. But redline, amsoil and all those oil are not available here... I will try to send a probe to Dyson and check how this Kendal 5W30...

AEHaas thinner oil vs. 10W60 on old 500HP V8?

talking about this, I put my the last time I changed oil (I removed the engine from the car and probably won't reuse it till next year) in a can and closed it about 6 month ago.. can I still send this probe for testing or won't it be accurate anymore after sitting so long in a can?

AEHaas thinner oil vs. 10W60 on old 500HP V8?

thanks for all the replies! Oh well, that's the point, my oil pressure is very good! The mopar HV oil pump usually has the pop off valve set at around 60PSI. My engine idles with Kendall 5W30 at around 2bar (900RPM) (30PSI) when hot and above 1500RPM I get about 4.5-5bar (65-72PSI). I NEVER...

AEHaas thinner oil vs. 10W60 on old 500HP V8?

After half a year running 5W30 on my 530HP Mopar 440 I was wondering if I shouldn't change to an oil like 10W60. I was told many times to do because they told me a 5W30 doesn't have such a film strength like a thicker oil. What's this all about.. what happens if I race that car and the engine...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

I got right now a Purolator filter, don't know much about oil filters except I don't want an FRAM, heard to much bad stories about them! Got back from my 3 day 1/4 racing weekend! With big traction problems, a carburator that is running way to lean (probably damaged!), 2000feet altitude, 90F &...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

hmm someone else also wrote that already... the HV pump DOESN'T creat higher pressure than the stock pump! The pressure relief spring is the same. It just pumps more oil IF it needs (bearing clearance to big, oil to thin), but the pressure is the same. It probably is an overkill in my engine...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

thank you guys... Today was a really hot day with 90F! I drove 20min 85mph, 10 times at WOT up to 100mph and then 10min city stop'n'go driving. The oil got a new record temperatur in the pan: 100C! (212F). But the idle pressure stayed the same (2.5bar (36PSI) at idle), so nothing to worry...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

Ok, I called my engine builder today. He said he put coated bearings in it (some anti-friction coated bearings by "Calico Coatings") and he put the clearance to around 0.002". That's what I am thinking! I mean, when reading Dr. Haas his text (I read it all) I shouldn't go to a thicker oil since...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

I found a company in Germany, also costs around 50EUR. In the usa it's about 1/2 the price! For that money I can send it 3x to the USA... our european prices, that's crazy...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

by the way, what about this oil leaks I read on this forum on the 300V series? Will I have a problem with this 1500mile old engine? I do have some small rear main seal leak with the 5W30, but nothing big. Many of this engines like to leak there. But if it get much worst with the 300V I don't...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

I asked on the Mopar Forum around here, nobody knows where you can make such an analysis. Maybe a Truck Dealer knows it, but here things costs usually 10x more, so I bet it's cheaper to send this sample to the USA for a few $ and let it test it over there! Ok, I did some googling, Redline is...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

The factory specs for the 440: - Connecting Rod bearings clearance desired: 0.001"-0.0025". - Crankshaft diametral clearance desired: 0.005"-0.002" Where did you find this Castrol 10W60 specs? On the homepage I didn't find any spec, like on ALL the other oil companies they just write "useless"...

guys, I really have NO idea what all this API SL-CF, ACEA A3-02 B3-98(Issue 2) etc. etc. means! That sounds like chinese to me! But I found this, I think that's the VOA of my Kendal 10W30 oil I got: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi ?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000251 So the Zinc...

thanks guys for the comments! Oh well, here are a few mopars and 440's (we just had a moparmeeting last week, some pics from last years are on www.moparnats.ch ) I do own a 72 Roadrunner GTX 440-Auto original TX9 black with B5 blue interior. THAT is the rar part of it here in Switzerland. I...

still confused: what oil now in a old HiPo 440 engine from 1970?

I read the whole oil text that was posted here http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/ and it was very interesting. I do own a 500HP Mopar 440 engine that I use for cruising but also like to drive at WOT or sometimes go to race it on the 1/4 mile! I got a HV oilpump and my engine builder told me he...

    high mileage oils???

Hehe, as said, I never thought I would get such results, but I was maybe very lucky. I just said that the Mondeo I got now got much shorter gears -> much higher RPM at the same speed than the 2 other cars before. That's why I thought first it consumes so much gas, although the difference was...
