Switched to this oil since now I'll be doing my own oil changes, might try the Kendall High Mileage since I was uing the synthetic blend of that before and it did a good job. (previous to that random brands from a local shop before they went to an all Kendall lineup). Kendall looks little cheaper and from what I know its a Conoco Phillips brand. Bought 2x5qt jugs of the Castrol, northstar takes 7.5gts so figured if it doesn't comsum any I'll use the other half next change.

Anyway posting about this Castrol, seems to be doing great, the engine runs smoother, I can feel more power especially past 2000 RPMS. With the oil cap removed and general look around in there it really does look like this oil "cleaned up" the engine.

98 Cadillac Deville with just under 90,000 miles on it. Northstar engine of course.

Was wondering what you guys felt about it. Will use the 10w-30 for the summer and when the winter rolls around (sometime before january) I'll switch to 5w-30 since it does get below 0 during winters here.

thanks for reply, and thanks for your on going service to this great country. (noticed your avatar

alright I'm considering switching from the High Mileage to Start Up. Anyone recommened one or the other either way? I was thinking the startup might get rid of the slight tick I've developed. Since it goes away after a moment I figured it might just be something not getting lubed from startup, and it only started when I swithed from the kendall to this. (this oil is thicker since its a high mileage blend where as the prevois was a synthetic blend, could just be coeincidance).

I should be hitting 90,000 mile by the ned of the month. (actually will hit it on my way to a wedding in kentucky on thursday).

I orderd a kit from blackstone labs and will be sending a used Oil analysis in on the Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w-30. I'll be going on this OCI until I see the oil is getting ugly or the EOLI tells me too

Start-up is an ester blend. It's a fine oil as is the case with all castrol products. Why not try 5-30 HM? Castrol has shown in the past to be shear stable.

I might give it a try next time around. The car is pulling pretty strong right now so I don't want to jynx a good thing.

The only advantage the 5w-30 would give is the cold weather support and its no problem to change the oil before winter. If I garage it this year it wont be in below zero temps over night so that would negate the need for the 5w-30 entirely.

Since the Northstar needs 7.5qts I buy 2 of the Castrol 5.5 jugs and an AC Delco filter (which I had to get at the dealer last time cause I bought a FRAM.......and then learned thats a NO NO) Pep Boys has an even lower price than what I paid last time at walmart. Its about 11-12 bucks so that makes it just under 2.20 a quart, and that aint bad

Always good to have some extra oil around, and if I do have a few left over I can always skip buying one jug the next time around

On the otherhand the service center I know well has the Kendall Synthetic Blend High Mileage 5w-30 or 10w-30 oil change for 24.99 (or 29.99 can't remember) and a NAPA oil filter which is a actually a pretty good price for all the oil this sump takes. I would give up that nice feeling of doing it myself if I do that...and since I did that last change myself for the first time I don't think I can go back...I've caught the bug...

thanks for the link, informational.

Well I don't think pepboys or walmart would give me the extra

The 5.5 jug are cheaper to buy 2 of then a 5.5 jub and 2 stand alone quarts.

The shop I go to has on thier sign 19.99 for dino, 24.99 for synthetic blend and high mileage and 29.99 for full synthetic...there theirs and "*" that says based on some quart fill. With that said I've never actualyl be charged extra by them for it.

On another note it did dawn on me that when I did have the 5w-30 kendall blend in, the longer the OCI went, the greater the oil comsumption, for example at the beginning it might have eaten up almost an not noticeable amount, but towards the end it was going down real quick.

Is that a sign of the shearing I've heard about?

With this castrol it so far hasn't eaten much if any up, and by this time I was noticing an increase with the kendall.

well the absense of any smoke out the pipe lead me to belive that it was ok, and the emmissions test showed better than normal for my model and past the state test with flying colors.

I wondered if it might shearing since they say the oil gets thinned out, if it thins out it will take up less space in the sump right? It bottomed out at the lowest most level of the dipstick. It was also getting pretty black at that point. The castrol has been in since and still looks nearly as good as when it was put in. (EOLI says 89% life left so it should look great).

I'll stick with this Castrol for now, seems like a great oil, and noticed they are a sponsor on your site and unless they pay ALOT I'm sure you guys wouldn't except a sub par sponsor (plus I see alot of racing teams with Castrol).

Some have said going to a synthetic or synthetic blend may get rid of the cold tick I get once in a while on overnight startups. Things to ponder.

I stand corrected in my "super duper" praise of the Castrol High Mileage (used with AC-Delco Filter). That startup lifter noise that I would get for a moment or so has totally vanished, it was gone as soon as the oil was changed (replaced with the same Kendall & Napa filter that was on it before the Castrol switch)

What makes that significant is that the noise began either just after I switched to the Castrol from the Kendall or not long after.

I've done a little searching (on BITOG forum mostly but google too) and wrong viscosity, a problem with the valve on the oil filter, and a slew of other things could have contributed.

Since the AC-Delco filters are reported to be a great filter I assume its the Castrol oil.

Now interesting enough when I did top it off (actually slightly overfilling...oops) that lifter noise was gone, so maybe it was something to do with the filter.

What led to me using the Kendall 5w-30 Synthetic Blend again is that I have been very busy lately and decided to let shop we go to for most service handle it this time (that and I can't seem to catch a break with the weather.) They use a NAPA filter.

So far I've driven a few hundred miles and the startup "tick" or what not is now gone with this oil. If I notice consumption getting out of hand I'll get it changed.

Should note that since I was so busy I did run the EOLI all the way down to 5%. The Castrol Oil didn't look "bad" but what dino oil at just less than 4500 mile interval should look like. By that I mean it looked like it would have been ok for some more miles.

Anyway thanks for the continued knowledge this forum brings, even if I tend to read more than post
