    1800 Miles oil change

Motor oil basestocks make up a tiny fraction of our crude consumption relative to gasoline. Furthermore, it could probably be argued that lubricant basestocks are a by-product of gasoline refining that would occur regardless. If he gets a solid 30mpg with his Passat, he'll be using about 60...

    My rides

I dig the white Astro van - didn't you try to sell me some speakers once? But seriously - I'm a big AR-767 fan. I have a set on my Ranger. They're SO ANTI-BLING. Nice rigs. M

    Bubbles on my dipstick

Hmm. Are you losing coolant? Any sludge under the radiator cap or in the overflow tank? Steam in the exhaust? I'd get a UOA done ASAP to check for coolant, just to be on the safe side. MR

New Oil & OCI Strategy - Please Comment!

I'd agree with mikep. In my limited experience at BITOG, it seems that M1 10w-30 has shown better results. All else sounds good. A couple of questions, though: 1. Why the "staged conversion" to M1? 2. Why the OCI's based upon time, rather than mileage? From another (relative) newbie, MR

Is Amsoil really the best motor oil?

Nissan, Shiner Bock, Sony, and me, respectively. I share the view of a couple of other people on this thread. It's great to see people on both side of the Amsoil fence discuss the product in a professional manner. Awesome board. MR

Perhaps a stupid novice question, but....

I pulled the filter on my Ranger the other day for an Auto-RX cycle with similar results. First thing in the morning, all the oil was in the sump and cold. Didn't drip oil at all. MR

What makes used oil turn dark?

I changed the oil in the wife's Xterra this weekend. 6k miles on the truck and 3k on the current fill: 2.5q Pennzoil 5-30 dino plus 1q Pennzoil synthetic. The oil came out rather dark. Darker than the factory fill at 3k and much darker than the GTX I drained out of my 60k mi Ranger, also at 3k...

Sounds like you've had pretty good luck thus far. I'd stick with the good (and cheap) dino. There are a few guys on the board with the Jeep six that might want to chime in... mr

Virgin Valvoline Synthetic MaxLife OA (10w30)

Agreed. If there were some advantage (economic or otherwise) to Valvoline's "Build Your Own Oil System," it would make sense. But for $4+, the oil shouldn't need anything at all added to it. MR

are 5w-20 oils now being used in engines that previously ran 5w-30?

The OA's on this site seem to indicate that 5w-20's on the market are pretty darn good oils. But what frightens me is that the oil manufacturers must beef up their dinos with Group III, plus a lot of moly and boron in order for the 5w-20 just to meet requirements. If moving down to 5w-20 in...

    Mobil One Prices Rising?

It's rolled back to $3.99 a quart here, and the 5 quart is around $19.88. Considering that's what it cost 10 years ago, maybe I should stock up... MR
