Most vehicles I have owned had horizontal filters equipped with anti-drainback valves that always seem to work just fine so even when the oil is drained from the pan they retain enough oil to make a fair mess. I have been known to puncture the filter with an awl and let it drip into the drain...

Those old flatheads had VERY soft valve springs with correspondingly low pressures on the cam/lifters. The real problem with those engines is the exceedingly poor crankcase ventilation; were it mine I would probably run SuperTech 5w-30 dino oil and change it every 1000 miles or every year...
