Need your professional opinion on tires

Ah .... Mmmm ..... Not exactly The company I used to work for put on a demonstration every year. They had people drive around a large circular track at about 50 mph. Part of the track had a film of water flowing across it. The first car had 4 new tires and it drove through the water like it...

When rotating tires, follow the OEM manual or tire manufacturer?

Yup, it doesn't matter much, so long as you do the front-to-rear. Although the cross helps eliminate heel and toe wear, but that is usually not a problem, unless there is an alignment issue.

    Tire Size Question

The Alpine symbol (3PMSF) is the result of a test and while tread pattern has a huge effect, from what I have been able to gather, tread rubber compound does play a role. Which is why All Weather tires exist.

    Tire Size Question

OK. It might be time for my lecture on Rolling Resistance: Long Version: Barry's Tire Tech: Followup on Rolling Resistance and Fuel Economy Short Version: There is a tread rubber technology triangle involving Treadwear, Traction, especially wet traction, and Rolling Resistance. In order...

    Tire Size Question

Just an FYI: There will be more difference between make/models of tires than a simple size change. Pay more attention to the specs for the make/model and less on the size.

    Are winter tires "worth it"?

Ah ..... Mmmmmm ....... Not exactly Long version: Barry's Tire Tech: Winter and All Weather Tires Short version: There are 2 tests - an acceleration test developed in the US and a braking test developed in Europe. In Europe, passing either test gets you the rating, but in the US and Canada...

Front Tires Wearing on Edges - More Air?

First, steer tires tend to wear in the shoulders and drive tires tend to wear in the center. That's why regular rotation is important - it evens out the wear pattern. Unfortunately, staggered fitment can't be rotated. Second, your driving style is adversely affecting this wear. Not only do...

    Hankook Dynapro AT2

Just an FYI: OE tires are completely different than the tires you get from the corner tire dealer - even if the name is the same. That's because an OE tire is built to the OEM's spec's, which are quite different than what the tire manufacturer would use if they were designing the tire. So...

The newbie to summer tires is back with a related question.

Don't be so sure of that. I encountered an ABS system that malfunctioned when new tires of a different size were applied, then changed back to normal when the original tire size was restored. I can envision a computer algorithm that remembers the tire diameter and kicks out a bad signal if...

    Awesome. Rear tire feathering. Cause?

Could the feathering be the result of too much inflation pressure? I wonder if the current tires are much larger than the original tire size and the net effect is that the inflation pressure needs to be lower so the footprint stays in proper contact with the ground. If the pressure...

    Static vs Dynamic balance

Sorry for the confusion, but you need spin balancing to get the dynamic balance values. Splitting the weights evenly is functionally the same as putting all the weights in the center. Dynamic balancing could result in different weights on each flange, it just depends on how bad the dynamic...

    Static vs Dynamic balance

Ah ...... Mmmm...... Not exactly. The weights are put behind the spokes and while it takes more weight (because the distance is shorter), because they are off center, they still create a dynamic couple.

    Static vs Dynamic balance

There are actually 3 things: Static Balance, Dynamic Balance, and Uniformity (think out-of-round and you'll be close.) Don't be so sure the OE's were only statically balanced. Car manufacturers set the specs and it's possible for them to set the specs tight enough that they don't need to do...

4runner needs new tires, Cooper tires any good?

The short answer is yes, the quality level is the same regardless of size. The long answer is that the design engineer will specify the same materials and adjust those specs for the demands of the size. Things like the amount of cord in the plies will be different from size to size, but the...

    Hot tire pressure

Ah ...... Mmm ........ I don't think this is entirely correct. I used a version of that several decades ago, and it was a MAXIMUM, not a target. Ya' see, the heat being generated is a function of speed, so you get different answers for 50 mph than for 70 mph. We used the rule of thumb to...

is there a chart that tells one which tire valve to use?

And just to complete the picture, there are different diameters of tire valves. Passenger cars and light trucks use the same diameter. Other vehicles vary from there. Those giant earth mover tires take a valve that is quite large. Even the pressure gauges are different (and larger!).

Normal for more tire wear in front?

My experience is that most tire wear occurs when a vehicle is cornering. Driving straight ahead is practically free. Also, steer tires tend to wear in the shoulders, where drive tires tend to wear in the center. Wear rates are dependent on the proportion of driving straight ahead vs...
