Greetings
I'm interested in thoughts on assembly lubes compatible with DOT5 brake fluid, ie silicone based. I understand that one OEM who spec'd DOT5 for awhile (Harley-Davidson) recommended NovaGard Versalube 322L but that's second hand info and why that formulation? What other lubes have worked / will work?
Please note: Not interested in turning this into a pro/con on DOT5 vs glycol fluids. That decision's been made!
Thanks in advance!
Paul

I just use DOT 5 brake fluid to assemble rubber parts in a DOT 5 system, it works fine. You can use Sil-Glyde if you want a thicker paste.

Quote:
Sil-Glyde Brake Lubricant is a silicone-based brake lubricant recommended for the entire brake assembly, is compatible with plastic and rubber (EPDM & Nitrile), and dampens vibrations between contact points

Hey Trav,

We've had numerous discussions before indicating that Sil-Glyde is not a true silicone product like the Dow and 3M brake/dielectric greases. The old Sil-Glyde msds's showed it to contain castor oil, polyethylene glycol, and just a bit (7-13%) of some type of silicone/silica component. https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2991445

I wonder if it safe for the DOT 5 application?

Edit: here's the old msds: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=18&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjv96DmterTAhVo44MKHZ9uCGA4ChAWCEwwBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fweblink.carquest.com%2Fmsds%2FCANADA%2FAGS%2FAGS%2520BK-4.pdf&usg=AFQjCNE0YsW55XPQ-4ZPuXqLdv0ikjWkdQ

Newer sds showing castor oil as the main ingredient: http://www.qualitydist.net/agss-sg4.html

They claim its compatible with EPDM rubber which is what brake parts are made from. Castor oil and polyethylene glycol are not an issue with EPDM either.
If there is a question about compatibility I would just call their tech support. Here are a couple of compatibility charts..

Edit: Its not a bad idea to flush the brake system after it has been in service a short time after repairs or assy so its not a big deal it will be flushed out anyway.
You don't want any additional thickeners from the assy lube in the brake fluid permanently.

Thanks for the inputs. I am looking for something with more body than the fluid itself. I'll take another look at Sil-Glyde. I also have some 100% silicone grease for dive reg parts. It's dimethylpolysiloxane which is the major constituent in DOT5 so that would seem compatible.
Best
