I believe M1 has some PAO in it, so a Group 3 & Group 4 mix.

The Super Syn is probably pure Group 3, like many other "budget" full synthetics.

I chase manufacturer specs like Dexos or A3/B4, rather than double guess base oil chemistry.

Generally speaking....in the Mobil motor oil hierarchy.

Mobil dino is a 5K oil.
Mobil Super Synthetic is a 7500 miles oil.
Mobil 1 is a 10K oil.
Mobil 1 EP is a 15K oil.
Mobil AP is an 'annual'...up to 20K oil.

Nothing about base oils here, but you can compare their 2013ish 5w30 VOA results side by side courtesy of the PQIA...

M1 had a higher TBN and VI, lower NOACK, was thinner at cold temps, etc. Not sure why Super had so much more boron...anyway, M1 generally looked a little better all around, but the Super syn certainly looked like a good oil here.

Looking up the modern 5W30 formulations on the XOM website was not too informative for me, they share mostly different spec parameters for the two oils and it makes it hard to compare them.

I agree SR5. In my online review of Mobil Super Synthetic I mention that I believe it to be a group 3 full synthetic. It is a fine oil that is Dexos approved in the 5w30 viscosity. It is a good buy when found on sale. Have to add that I've found pics of Castrol Magnatec saying full synthetic on the container. So now I feel like there are two very good options at or around $20 that are very good oils.

And all M1 oils also have esters as well.

I guess the discussion is about Mobil Super Synthetic.

And not Mobil 1 with "SuperSyn".

Advance Auto Parts seem to alternate having either or on sale in their internet & monthly sales . Usually with a free oil filter .

I have been buying / using which ever one is on sale .

But I may consider switching to Mobil 1 EP

I bought several oil filters on sale / close out & will not need any " free " ones for some time .

As previously said , for us GM owners , both are Dexos spec .

God bless

They are both dexos1 Gen 2 qualified according to the attached summary, but 5W30 EP and AP apparently are not at this point!

Might be something that other DIT engine owners would find useful. Plenty of other WalMart oils on there, too.
