If anyone is interested in the internal temperatures of AT's here is a study I did a number of years ago. I use this presentation in classes in Automotive Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and at the Transmission Shops that work with me on ATF formulations.

Pretty good stuff. Seems like the gist of it is-if you demand anything other than standard, easygoing operation from an automatic transmission-an external cooler, oversized pan, & full synthetic fluid is a REQUIREMENT!

For towing and moving heavy loads, yes.

And frequent fluid changes of approx. 35k or so.
