Finding this process very interesting.

Here's a steel plate butt weld that's joined using a high temperature "bit" that drags the material into a viscous pool, that then mixes and solidifies.



Can "spot weld" aluminium panels onto cars etc. using the technique.

Depends on matierial and geometry...Al is faster


No welding bays and fume extraction...
 
The Eclipse 500 small jet aircraft is constructed using friction stir welding. It's a method to replace many of the rivets. I am not sure how well it's working out.
