Hello BITOG,
I installed a set of Centric PQ Pro brake pads from Rockauto about 60k KM (40k miles) ago, and I just want to provide feedback on these pads plus ask for any recommendations for new pads:
Review on PQ Pro brake pds:
These brake pads come with a high-friction red coating which supposedly helps "bed in" the new rotors I also installed at the same time. I did a proper brake bed-in process per the instructions online. The initial few thousand KMs were great, brakes have great stopping power almost feeling like grabby.
However, over the next 5X,000 KM, the braking performance decreased quite a bit. I live in Ontario, Canada, where we get cold winters and salted roads. When the brakes were stone cold (not extreme, just regular -15 degree C weather), they don't really work and require quite a lot of pedal pressure to stop at a stop sign. Luckily i have a few of those and stoplights before i need to get on the highway, but it's just not confidence inspiring. I had to tell the less mechanically-inclined family members to warm the brakes up before you join the highway, certainly don't want to discover the weak brakes when doing an emergency stop from highway speeds.
In summer, the performance didn't really improve. I have had a few instances where it was mid-speed stop and go, and by the time i reach a stop light, i was surprised at the amount of fade the pads already had, and i had to give it quite a bit of pedal pressure again to stop. Around town the brakes are fine, in line with the factory pads i had before these.
TLDR: PQ Pro brake pads did not meet my expectations due to poor cold-bite and below optimal warm-bite.
Now the question of, what's next?
Rockauto has a few choices i an interested in, mainly the following:
Raybestos Element3 Hybrid
Powerstop Z23 Evolution Sport
Akebono Performance (leaning towards this one atm as i have used this on a different car)
Akebono ProACT
Advics (it says OE replacement, i think it's just a model name)
Factory pads are also a viable choice, but i am looking to improve on the factory braking performance or feel a bit for safety purposes. I do understand there is an option to do a big brake upgrade by installing Highlander/Sienna brakes onto the Camry, but it's a bit pricy.....
Curious to know your thoughts, and sorry for the long post!
