You're absolutely correct -- let me clarify my earlier recommendation.

This issue isn't cleaning, as any flavor of Mobil 1 will do a fine job (as you've mentioned). Complications arise when neglected seals are asked to perform their intended job again, often with dismal results...this is why you see such opposition from individuals to running synthetics as they've previously experienced leaking/high consumption after making the switch in the past.

Mobil 1, with their High Mileage product, will effectively allow us to make the switch and mitigate the seemingly ineluctable sealing issues.
 
If it were mine I'd probably run QS Defy or Chevron Delo. They both seem to work fine in my dinosaur.

Dare I recommend my favorite for old iron (or alloy in this case)?
Maxlife 10W-40 would be a good choice.
Worried about coolant in the oil?
No worries, since that will manifest itself in a UOA with sodium way beyond the virgin content of Maxlife and you'll see plenty of potassium as well.
