Supposedly the new resistor module (which is a revision # part) is supposed to be a lot better. It looks NOTHING like the one that came out.

My original one went out when the car was 4 years old. The revised replacement one has been in there for 5 years now and so far still going, knock on wood.

I swapped my resistor last Fall. I'm pretty sure it was the original because it was an absolute bear to get out. No issues with the cupholders as no beverages are allowed in my car.

I bought it in Florida and drove it back to Pa. Bavauto is bookmarked...

Another thought: I wonder if there might be some mild internal corrosion issues in an engine this "babied" for that long? That could throw off the "wear" numbers.

Of course, all cars are meant to be driven, but Overkill is right -- especially in this case, that car is meant to be driven. Track your results over the next several changes and see what you get. All you have now is one snapshot. With more data, you'll be able to draw some more meaningful conclusions.

and welcome to the site. Enjoy.

I do not drive it hard at all (highest RPM has been about 5800 and never bounced off the limiter). No additives and it hasn't burned a drop of oil as far as I can tell. I just sent off another sample today (26,440 miles), so we'll see what it says...

DRIVE it. It's a Motorsport car, it is meant to be driven, and driven hard.

Heck yeah! Drive it like ya stole it :^) Definitely use the 10W60 too.

Or according to BMW,maybe PP 5W50/M1 5W50,15W50/Syntec 5W50

If Castrol High Performance Synthetic Oil is not available and you need to add oil between oil changes, only use synthetic oils with the following specifications for M vehicles:

Viscosity - preferred SAE 10W-60

Alternative - SAE 10W-40, SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50

His is a post 03/00 car (like mine), it takes BMW 5w30, PU 5w40 or M1 0w40.

Better results this time around (BMW 5W30 again). OVERK1LL, were you using the TWS 10W60 before the 2009 bulletin came out? My current run will be on the TWS (as I was going off the 2008 bulletin).

Comment: While there's still more metal than we would like to see in your S62's second sample, things are headed in the right direction. Iron, copper, and lead may still show some extra bearing wear, but lead is the only metal reading far enough out of line to highlight this time. Much of the lead could be residual from the previous oil. We'll look for all three metals to read lower again next sample unless your M5 happens to see a lot of racing or spirited driving. The viscosity read in the 5W/30-grade range this time around. Check back at your next oil change to start seeing trends.

My car was maintained by BMW until I got it, so I must assume it was run on their 5w30. I only picked this car up in August and immediately switched it to M1 0w40.
