1944 diesel boat 671 oil filters

I have a trawler converted from a picket boat built by Navy in 1944. Twin 671's model 64HN9. I'm told they no longer make oil filters. Need to find stockpiled filters or something else I can use. Any ideas.

Id call or contact oil filter suppliers directly. Detroit Diesels are about the best aftermarket-supported engine ever made, I can't believe that no one makes either a filter, or an adapter to run a more modern filter. Even the original inline 6-71 like yours is still pretty widely used. I did a little googling to find promising links, but I didn't follow up on any:

we have no problem getting detroit diesel filter at my work! we use napa wix and hastings! fyi

is it a spin on or a cartridge?

Most of the Navy WWII era small boat used Gray Marine conversions of the 6-71. I don't know about the oil filtration for sure (even though I once worked on them... that was a long time ago) but I seem to recall they were "different" than wheeled vehicle systems. I would start by pulling one of the old filters and looking for any part numbers to cross reference. Then, take measurements of the fitler and see what you can find by that.
 
the reson i ask cartridge or spin on is we converted ours 10 years ago to spin on with a kit from a local truck supplier. mike
 
i think i may have a couple of oil filters yet,(and probably fuel filters also) i'll check tomorrow and let you know, i can't remember the part # off of the top of my head, it has been 20 years since we had one of those in service.

the pic gary has above looks to be the same filter we had used
 
Thank you all for your thoughts. It is a Gray Marine diesel and the filter looks like the top cartridge that Gary sent a picture of.

I worked on a lot of them in the Navy. 4-53's all the way up to 16V-71's, even a few 16V-149's as used on the Perry class frigate.
 
If you're still stuck, remove the filter assembly from the engine and take it to a Detroit Diesel shop or a major filter supplier. Either they can I.D. a filter element, or direct you to a new filter assembly that uses a current filter element. You might have to do some re-piping.
